G+_Paul Riley
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ I'm an avid watcher of KH and am getting increasingly interested in quads, I have no previous experience of RC aircraft, and would like to take baby steps into the arena. Having looked round it seems as though a suggested path in is by starting with the Hubsan X4 as it will fly comfortably indoors as well as outdoors. I see this as the airframe that I would learn how to fly it, to progress on to more advanced aspects of flying quads, and then see how far I can mod it before moving on. Before buying it I'd be interested in your, as well as the rest of the communities thoughts on this quad as a beginner device. Keep up the good work. G+_Rob Yesta
Most will recommend the Syma X5C-1 or similar clone as a good solid trainer. Syma did upgrade to newer models but I have not tried them. The Hubsan X4 is small and will not represent the feel of the larger quads. It's great for indoors but the wind outside knocks it around. And finding in tall grass can be tough.
G+_Paul Riley
Rob Yesta did initially look at the Syma X5 but was concerned that it would be too big for indoor training, especially over the winter months. Thoughts are that the X5C would be the quad to progress onto in six months time.
G+_Paul Riley
Would I also be right in saying that smart phone controlled quads, such as the Parrot Rolling Spider, offer a poor control experience (laggy wifi), and should be ignored. G+_Ben Reese
I like my Hubsan X4 and it's nice to be able to fly inside. It's also small enough that the kids hurt too badly when you fly into them. My brother has a Syma, but I agree that it's a bit big if you have a small area to fly. The Hubsan can be difficult to fly outside - especially if it's windy. Make sure you've got a good area to fly in and don't be afraid to cut the throttle and drop it. It's pretty tough but can be difficult to find if it gets too far away. I did end up breaking the body on mine a couple times. Superglue helped with the smaller cracks, but falling from 100ish feet did it in.
G+_Larry Havenstein
you can get replacement parts for the Hubsan X4 on Amazon. I like my little X4 for in the house.
G+_Rob Yesta
I started with the super small nano size. I have an Hubsan like H4 size with camera to mess around with indoors. I like it but it is a bit heavy. My Syma X5C-1 was great to learn before moving into the custom 250 class build. I also picked up WLToys W686G with FPV and screen. Flies similar to The Syma and was only $100. Something to try FPV before breaking my KH250. Any of the JJRC or Eachine H8 size quadcopters are fun in the office. Small, fast and don't hurt when running into people. And for under $20 great cubicle warfare.
G+_Rob Yesta
Paul Riley Some may disagree but I like the videos from Quadcopter 101 and Flyin' Ryan RC on You Tube. Ryan flies in his small kitchen and limited yard outside. Take a look.?
