G+_Steve C
How To Request A Windows 10 Upgrade? +Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ & +Bryan Burnett! This might make a good segment for KH. My laptop with Win 7 never got the windows icon saying an upgrade to Windows 10 has been reserved so I tried to see if I could request it manually but there doesn't seem to be any way to do that. On the Windows 10 FAQ webpage Win 10 Q&A says that you can request an upgrade by just going to the download page but when I get there it just redirects me back to the Q&A page again so I just go round n round but there is never a way to download anything or actually make a request! Does anyone see a way to get out of this endless loop? On PCs that have got the windows 10 icon you do get the option to for a request but not if you didn't get it. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq?ocid=win10_auxapp_LearnMore_win10faq http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq?ocid=win10_auxapp_LearnMore_win10faq
G+_Steve C
That didn't help.
G+_Steve C
Running GWX is too easy! I wonder why Microsoft doesn't know to do that?
G+_Ben Reese
I haven't looked around much, but has anyone heard whether an ISO will be available for clean install? I know there's a thumbdrive on Amazon pre-buy, but that includes the license that few will actually need.
G+_Steve C
The little flag that says you have reserved an update went away today! I wonder if they are recalling the invitation for free updates?
G+_Ben Reese
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO On Windows it gives you a downloader to DL the ISO. On I presume any other OS it offers the direct ISO to download. I just used device emulation in desktop Chrome to trick it into thinking I was on Android. G+_Steve C
Well I think it's odd that the invitation just went away without a clue as to what to do next. It used to say there was an update for Win 10 in the Windows Update area of Control panel but that went away too!
G+_Steve C
I downloaded the update to a thumb drive then tried installing it but when it gets to the part where it asks for a Product Key I put in the Win 8.1 key that I've been using but it says that key didn't work, try a different key. I tried the key from the previous version of Win 7 that I had been using and that didn't work either. I even tried the key from the Win 10 Pro Insider Preview Evaluation copy but none of them work. Does anyone know how to get a good key for Win 10?
G+_Steve C
I tried downloading the .iso and it's almost 6 Gb, too large to fit on a DVD! Is everyone at Microsoft idiots? Nothing works, I don't think they thought out any of this very well!
G+_Steve C
I opted for both 64 and 32 and it's from Microsoft where do you think! Even 3.8 Gb is too large to fit on a DVD though so it looks like the 32 bit version is the only one that can be used. So where did you guys get usable Product Codes? G+_Steve C
My Windows 10- 64 bit was 3,269,120 so it did fit on a DVD.
G+_Steve C
I had to do an Upgrade to Win 8.1 since a new install using a disk or usb stick wouldn't work. That seemed to work OK and couldn't complain about the Product Key not being right since it was in use at the time! I had wanted to install W10 on a larger drive than 8.1 was using but don't see any way to do that right now. I elected to leave the apps and settings and it mostly worked but I didn't have much installed in 8.1. I.E. and Paint seem to be gone, One Drive has an error and when I started Edge, the new browser, it froze then rebooted but everything else seems to be working. Now when Windows starts up and I login it asks for my Pin, not a password, which might be a problem if you don't know what your Pin is.
G+_Ben Reese
A regular, single-layer DVD holds 4.7 GB, so not sure why a 3 - 4 GB ISO wouldn't fit. Maybe I'll try burning it later. I'm not sure yet how to get a Win 10 upgrade key. I'll have to do some research on that if I have time after the kids go to bed ?
G+_Steve C
Ben, if you get just the 32 or 64 bit version it will fit on a DVD but the combined version at nearly 6 Gb won't fit. I have no idea how you can get a key though since it won't accept keys from Win7 or 8.1.
G+_Ben Reese
It seems you have to do an in-place upgrade before you can get the Win 10 license key to upgrade. Seems pretty stupid, but I guess that's what they expect most people to be doing anyhow. I'll probably be installing Win 7 on my desktop now so I can upgrade it to 10 and be ready to upgrade my wife's laptop to 10 on the new SSD that's coming in the mail tomorrow... A bit if a hassle, but it's worth the try at least.
G+_Steve C
I don't really want to install it twice every time, guess I'll wait until someone finds a better way to do it.
G+_Steve C
But that's doing it twice and the upgrade takes forever so you are looking at installing all day for just 1 PC!
G+_Steve C
What if I don't have enough room on the laptop for an upgrade and want to install it on a larger disk?
G+_Steve C
Does anyone know how to remove an app that was installed in the Windows Store in 8.1 so it doesn't show up in Uninstall A Program but now won't run in W10 and there doesn't seem to be any way to remove it?
