A patch panel is overkill for residential in my opinion unless you have a need for multiple networks or switching cables around on the fly.

I would and have just bundle your network cables together, male them and plug them into a huge switch. Then get you router up and away from all that metal.

Don't forget to UPS all of your network gear. Have fun!

As others have said, the patch panel is just the termination point of the cables. It's not necessary, but recommended if you have more than just a couple cables.

From the patch panel you connect to a switch with patch cables. An additional switch probably isn't necessary if you're not using more than the 4 LAN ports that most routers include.

If you don't want to use a patch panel, you can crimp the RJ45 plugs directly to the cables or you could punch them down to some keystone jacks. If you're in the US (and they probably ship internationally too), I'd recommend ordering from Monoprice. They'll have patch panels, patch cables, and most other cabling item you'll need.
