G+_Arcturus Lancaster
Greeting looking for ideas about weird problem . Something weird happening on my network. Causing video playback to pause and then resume at the next key frame. Video files live on freenas server. Playback on win 7 media player classic. Computers are wired on gigE connection. Media computer has a spike in traffic just at the pause. Has gotten to every 5 min or so now. ? Edit: seems to only happen with older low bitrate files. New content (720p+) does not seem to have this issue. Could it be buffering enough for something to time out?
G+_Mikael Eidsvaag
Interesting problem. Perhaps there are some issues with one particular codec? Try with standard windows media player and Classic media player and vlc. The curious thing is that your HD content works fine, try to find the main different between the files: resolution, bit rate, codec etc. and if you can try to disconnect all the other machines on you network except your server and main computer and see if that helps. Also it cud be that your switch/Ethernet-cables are getting a bad connections, I think freenas has an overview I the web interface that shows you what link speed your server has. Good luck =)
G+_Arcturus Lancaster
Mikael Eidsvaag ko so is divx codec. and have hickup on my mint machine. playing with totem. so this leads me back to thinking the nas is doing something. don't thing it is a damaged file. when i skip to just before the pause it does not happen again. damaged file should glitch same place every time. G+_Mikael Eidsvaag
Ok, so I am not an expert on freenas. But what can help is that you “produce” an error and then poste all the pictures from the Report sections on freenas’s web interface. And perhaps someone can figure it out. In addition, freenas has their own google+ site so maybe you can get more help form them =). Also what are the specs on the server. some of the newer versions of Freenas needs better components. G+_Arcturus Lancaster
Mikael Eidsvaag will have to do that. specs should be fine. Is a q9400 with 8 gigs of ram and 4 tb mirrored disks. just dawned on me that both solutions are using ffmpeg decoder. tho never had this issue before. G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Can you do some quick differential diagnosis? Use a different client computer, try to replicate the problem. -- If you can't problem lies with client. If you can't problem lies with network or FreeNAS server. G+_Arcturus Lancaster
Tracked it down to the server. Turns out enabling power management on the disks caused the problem. Guess the bitrate was low enough that the buffer would fill and allow the disks to spin down. Meanwhile HD content will keep the disks spinning.
