G+_Rud Dog
Is this true? The Time Machine archives are encrypted and aren't really designed to be accessed from any machine other than the one that generated it.
G+_Nick Gailfus
I would think it was tied more to the Apple ID. Otherwise you couldn't restore to a new computer.
G+_Ben Reese
Yeah, I couldn't imagine that encryption tied to a machine would make much sense for backup.
G+_Nick Gailfus
Just looked at their documentation. You set a password for the encrypted backup. So if you need to restore you just need to know the password you used.
G+_George Gomez
Is time machine a better option than online backup?
G+_Ben Reese
Depends on your needs. If you just want to archive in case your house burns down, online is better. If you want constant and quick access, Time Machine (or a NAS) would be better. Most people would recommend both.
G+_George Gomez
What NAS enclosure would you recommend for a low budget person?
G+_Ben Reese
I haven't really found anything to go with yet myself. I've got a home server with I think 4 drives in it now and that just stays on all the time. Then I've got that synced to CrashPlan. Doesn't really follow the 3-2-1 rules, but I think it's an ok option for the price.
G+_Rud Dog
With my question in mind why can't my laptop see the timemachine backup created for my desktop? Taking it a step further why can't the desktop see the backup created for the laptop? The backups are on a LAN WDmycloud drive. They machines are running different versions of OS X. You would think if you wanted to grab some pics stored on he Desktop backup (lan drive) it would be possible from the Laptop. Along with the reverse Laptop pics from the desktop lan drive backup. G+_James Berry
I have a 2 TB LaCie drive that has served from OS X 10.7 to 10.9.
