G+_Rud Dog
What kind of search would I try, to find a method and hardware to create video storage of all my DVD movies accessible from my lan. Would be nive to be able to see my movies something like Netflix or other online movie servers.
G+_Josh Frye
You should check out Plex.

G+_Midwest Concert Video
I loves me my Plex. I use a Macbook Air with a broken screen that I got for free as a Plex server. Super low power consumption and nice and quick.
G+_Rud Dog
On my way to research Plex. My DVD collection thanks you all even though they are sitting in the garage on a shelf seeing no use:)
G+_Rud Dog
Scanned through the pedia write up on Plex and now headaches abound. Jason Greenwood how long did one DVD take to move from the disc media to the hard drive on your server? Midwest Concert Video I have a roku with the remote sporting headphone jack, does this model have the ability to attach USB Drive and use plex? If so I am assuming you can load Plex on the disk drive attacked to roku via USB jack if it has one?
G+_Rud Dog
Jason Greenwood What is the connection configuration? I see you use a PC somehow access through your Roku but not real sure how? Can the Roku act as the front end for something like a USB hard drive connected to the Roku USB port? G+_Timothy Hamlett
I actually use Slysoft's AnyDVD to rip the DVD's to ISOs before I convert them - it makes a lot less noise, and it's more time efficient: you can iso all the dvds on a weekend using the free trial, and then use handbrake later to convert them all. G+_Timothy Hamlett
Yes, the the fact that Plex is on so many platforms and as plugins etc is why I chose it in the first place. That and the fact it was on KnowHow.
G+_Rud Dog
If my comment got posted without looking complete it will be because my dog jumped on my keyboard with its "bear like claws" and my screen switched back and forth and who knows what happened to the original posting. Anyhow was going to say my biggest annoyance is having a server online running all the time. From your comment I see you have worked around this by using the sleep mode on your server and having plex wake it up. Not sure if that was easy to setup or not. Would like to use something that uses very little power while running that is probably the next step finding low power server. Guessing don't need a lot of horsepower to serve up movies or do I? G+_Rud Dog
Thanks Jason Greenwood will be checking in to see your progress. Can't help wondering why the Roku could not be the access gate to a hard drive via usb.
G+_Rud Dog
Update. Dusted off the cobwebs from an old XP machine cleaned it up then went searching for Plex only to find out XP is not supported by Plex. Decided to search for other movie serving software and ran across Amediaserver. Installed was able to see my XP machine from my TV. The folder path was Name of computer/myname/root. So naturally I went to find this directory so i could drop a test video into this folder and and run it. Unfortunately the path could not be found and to my surprise the installation of the software was not showing up after doing a search on the XP machine. Used some software which allows you to remove installed applications to my second surprise it was not listed as installed. Should I be concerned? Anyone have similar experience? Hope I don't have to reinstall complete OS and don't know alot about install points.
