G+_Rud Dog
Hey all, have a WD series lan drive with their multi-device access software installed. Is there software that can be installed on the WD cloud drive that will serve movies or do I have to buy something like the Synology NAS drive? G+_Eddie Foy
Is it connected to a computer or the network? If computer, you will need to set ip up for sharing. If its connected to the LAN then it should be pretty straight forward.
G+_Eddie Foy
But a plug for the Synology NAS's. I love mine. Nice interface (plus SSH/Telnet for the geek in me) Its running a RADIUS, EMAIL, DHCP, DNS, TFTP, SysLog, & PLEX servers and bittorrent client here. They claim all their devices run the same OS, from lowest to highest. Looking to get another to spread the load.
G+_Jeff Brand
If it's a NAS then it should already serve the files over DLNA/UPnP or Windows file sharing - within the network. Also, slightly older WD NAS models had a hidden but stock feature to unlock SSH access. If that still exists you can definitely start to tinker. The real question is what you mean by "serve." I'm in the process of evaluating a Buffalo NAS - so far I'm loving the throughput but haven't taken the extra step to get shell access and start adding packages through the NSLU2 project. G+_Jason Miles (SmoothBass
The WD NAS devices have a media server built in thru DLNA. You have to turn it on in the settings as its not on by default. It has iTunes server ability as well.
