G+_Rud Dog
What website does everyone trust for downloading those free app or programs. My preference was Download.com but lately they have been bundling the free software with lots of well lets just call it crapware.
G+_Eddie Foy
Go to the developer's own website/github
G+_Steven Atkinson
Eddie Foy exactly what I do, I use download.com as an absolute last resort.
G+_Eddie Foy
I also try to buy from the developer's site over Apple's MacAppStore. (why should Apple get that 30%)
G+_Rud Dog
Yes Eddie was looking for da free stuff thanks for amplifying that very important.
G+_Ryan Standeven
I like to use ninite for new competers. Makes things ultra simple. https://ninite.com/help/how-ninite-works/
G+_Eddie Foy
You should still toss the developers of free software some cash if you use and like it. Thank them.
G+_Ben Reese
I use Ninite for as much as possible. If it's not on Ninite (such as Ultra VNC, Handbrake, etc) I'll search out the developers website or Source Forge page. I guess anymore I don't spend much time looking through freeware. It's just hard to know what/who to trust.
G+_Rud Dog
Thanks all will do on the Ninite site first time hearing about that one. As for tossing some cash if the SW I find does indeed meet the needs I most certainly toss them some coin.
G+_Ben Reese
Just saw this posted by Notepad++ https://plus.google.com/+notepad-plus-plus/posts/aRqNfHtX6Tt It's a link to a blog post by a VLC dev telling about how Source Forge has begun transitioning to the Dark Side. I guess I'll be avoiding Source Forge now too ?
G+_Eddie Foy
Gotta pay the bills somehow. Bandwidth ain't cheap.
G+_Ben Reese
I totally agree. It would be curious to see the amount of revenue by packaging "opt-in" crapware. I'd suspect it's not enough to make up for the loss in traffic driven by VLC and Gimp. I suspect the peer to peer bittorrent model would solve many of the bandwidth problems if the protocol didn't have such a negative reputation. G+_Jason Marsh
alternativeto.net lists apps with reviews, descriptions, and links directly to the official download source. Sometimes that's github, download.com, sourceforge, et al, and sometimes it's the developer's own website. I've not gotten any crapware downloading from links at alternativeto
