G+_Rud Dog
Want to add to my hobbies the latest is a cisco switch for my home network. I found this one with a price of less then 200 dollars but it has no OS. Cisco Compact 24-Port Gigabit Switch with 2 Combo Mini-GBIC Ports (SG102-24-NA) Can anyone recommend a smart "Cisco" smart switch with same specs for that price. The hobby part of this want to learn and setup Cisco OS from CLI. (Have taken some very basic Cisco classes)
G+_Eddie Foy
Search ebay. Get a used switch. I did buy my Catalyst 2960 PoE Gb 24port, new, but that's $1500. if you are OK with 100Mbs, you can get Catalysts pretty cheap. (then enjoy the Cisco IOS upgrade 'support')
G+_Rud Dog
Yikes! Eddie the math is askew 200 < 1500? Really need the GB speed as it will be part of my futuristic updated video setup if I ever get to that project/hobby. But get the drift can probably get the switch I need on Ebay. G+_Eddie Foy
Well if you are looking for Gb and IOS. (Cisco's can throw packets like a no one's business) Used might be slim pickings until 10Gb is the norm. and the forklift upgrades start happening. Now, smart vs managed is another story. Cisco does have some lower-end stuff, but reviews I read were so-so, that's why I went for the Catalyst. I did grab 3750 48 port PoE 100Mbs at a swap meet for $150, and a 2821 router for $50. Do keep in mind firmware upgrades (even for bugs/vulns) are paid upgrades. (usually in a service contract)
G+_Taylor Graham
All of the 3750s and 2900 series stuff is probably coming up for replacement soon, since the 3750x and 3850s are out now. Im sure you can find a 3750 on ebay, and they should be running v12 or so of Cisco IOS, which is very similar to the newer IOSXE. Im sure you can find one on ebay. I just replaced a 3750 with a 3850 and have the old 3750 sitting at home. The thing pulls like 60 watts! Get two if you can. Playing with vlans/trunks would be nice with two switches. G+_Rud Dog
Thanks all ...don't think I can afford sustaining a paid service contract with Cisco, Just the sentence sound expensive. WOW the 60 watts is a deal breaker would be nice having something that can step down or up as needed. Guessing these guys have fans on them as in noisey ? Really was looking forward to playing with a managed switch but it appears it would be at the expense of other hobbies.
G+_Taylor Graham
Keep in mind that was a POE switch. Nothing was connected though, so i imagine a non POE switch would be similar. Its not that loud, i could tolerate it. But you can definitely hear it. Also, you wont need a contract with cisco to play with an older switch. No need to upgrade it. You can definitely get the older cisco stuff for not that much money. Check ebay or go industrial park dumpster diving!
G+_Rud Dog
Taylor, you are a mind reader or a reader of posts. I am in the market for a POE switch for my video upgrade which has nothing to do with the upgrade of my 1GB switch. So a plain jane smart switch might be the way to go will review your suggestions. Hopefully there is not an arrest warrant in my future. PS is there a standard for voltage attached devices to a POE switch?
G+_Taylor Graham
Good luck! Dell makes nice managed switches that are cheaper than cisco, easier to configure too. Maybe check out a used Dell if you cant find a cisco. There are a few standards, i believe 24v and 48v are the most common, so make sure you check your devices for compatibility.
