G+_Tim D
Why don't you just keep router 2&3 as switch's and have it all in the same subnet?
G+_Rud Dog
One of the routers branches is intended for Internet of things the other my secure lan. IOT's has had some reports of security problems and this prompted me to search out a way of defending against intrusion or at least attempting it. G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Tim Dickinson? he's going for the "3 Dumb Router" setup. Nodes on .2 are protected from those on .3 and vice versa. If he flattened the network, that would defeat the design.
G+_Thomas Reiner
Tim Dickinson? that would be like having a safe without a back wall... Looks good but useless ;-)
G+_Rud Dog
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ During your last show there was a mention of the synology router having VLAN capability(can't stop thinking about this, love the idea). Does this apply to the wireless portion of the router or just the physical ports on the router?
G+_Russell Williams
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ? I asked in another discussion, if Router 1 was running DD-WRT & this capable of VLAN support b do you still need 3 dumb routers? I agree the the approach offers less of a ball ache. G+_Rud Dog
Russell Williams The cost is the main factor in not purchasing a switch with VLAN capability(for me). If I had know the Synology offered VLAN for it ports it would have been my choice. Unfortunately it was not available when my purchase of the RT-AC87u was made. G+_Tim D
Just get smoothwall running and lock down your network. vlan is not a substitute for a secure network.
