G+_Rud Dog
Why does my RT-AC87u have 2 ip addresses. One is the default gateway address and the other is from the family of 169.254.39.0 family?
G+_Ben Reese
One should be your LAN side private IP and the other should be your WAN side public IP. If you have port forwarding setup, the public WAN side IP is what you would use from outside your network.
G+_Akira Yamanita
It's strange to have the autoconfigured address enabled when the interface has a static IP address. Perhaps they use it for some proprietary discovery mechanism.
G+_Rud Dog
Akira Yamanita This is great info, so the address I posted, is the "autoconfigured" address that comes with the router from the factory? Makes sense when I think about it ...unless it has other form of connection serial connection for example it would not be able to connect with out an autoconfigured address, right? G+_Akira Yamanita
It's supposed to be random within the 169.254.0.0/16 block but Asus apparently uses 169.254.39.0/24. It's really just an alternative for environments where DHCP isn't used and static addresses aren't assigned. That's why it's strange to see both addresses. (I'm assuming that you're seeing this on the same interface that serves as the gateway address for your network.)
G+_Rud Dog
Akira Yamanita Yes they are both on the same interface serving as the gateway for my network. It would have never showed up under a normal scan as the scanning software only shows IP addresses for the range you enter like 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Can't remember what possessed me to try that range 169.254.39.0 of addresses but when I did it showed up. It would nice if someone wrote software which checks all possible addresses on your LAN with out having to submit a range list.
G+_Donald Weller
169 addresses in my experience are when Windows did not grab an iP address from dhcp.?
