G+_Alistair Pirie
So I go to youtube today morning, just to listen to Tech News Today. In other words I went to youtube just to get up to date with the news. And on today's show we had Tom Merritt saying he still doesn't think of youtube as a place people go to for news. He said that on a news show, that is uploaded to youtube. So I'm listening to my news on youtube and the news is that youtube is not a place we go to for the news. It was ironic and funny in so many different ways :P Still, great show! Love watching TNT and Twit, keep up the good work, but maybe you guys should try to be more aware of the community you're creating yourselves :)
G+_Ken Fromchicago
Tom Merritt probably means he still doesn't think of #YouTube as a place [most] people think of as a "news" site. A lot of people don't think of #Twitter as a "news" site even tho a lot of news has been linked to from Twitter and increasingly a lot of news has actually broken on Twitter. G+_Donna Daley
I think that there is a difference between tech news, and world news. I wouldn't look for world news on You Tube. I wouldn't look for tech news on television news.
G+_Dan Phillips
I agree. When I want the news I don't think of YouTube. I think of CNN or my local station. That may change over the years but for now YouTube just means cat videos and groin shots to most people.
G+_Tom Paladino
Agreed. I find myself visiting/watching YouTube more and more all the time. I don't watch it for news though. Perhaps I'd fire up a feed from NPR or CNN in the morning before work. I just never thought to go to YouTube for news before.
G+_Alec Chvirko
I think it is a matter of trust. In the past, we always believed that we could trust the major broadcast news sources such as CNN, ABC, etc. and that citizen news was less reliable because it wasn't subject to the same sort of scrutiny. Which is still true, but more and more people are starting to trust major media outlets less because they have become so sensationalist and trust citizen reporting more because (with rising viewership of things like youtube and twitter) it is starting to be scrutinized by the public. G+_Tom Merritt
Yeah, I was saying I don't think of it as that kind of place. Part of that is the small percentage (I mean really really small) of people who watch TNT on YouTube.
G+_Vandré Brunazo
I do agree not many people think of youtube as a news source. I was just pointing it was a funny inception-like situation to be listening to the news on youtube, about people not listening to the news on youtube, on a news show that gets posted on youtube. Maybe I'm just silly (ok, certainly), but I thought that was funny :P
G+_Tom Merritt
The oddity is not lost on me. I like describing it as Inception. Or even hypnotism. "You are not listening to news right now YOU ARE NOT LISTENING TO NEWS RIGHT NOW. YOU ARE NOT READING A GOOGLE PLUS POST...."
G+_Dale Moore
I'm curious what sort of news we are talking about here. Citizen journalism, or traditional media uploading clips of their broadcast shows? Being a cordcutter, the biggest gap in content for me is accurate timely news. There are various apps that allow me to watch clips from traditional media outlets, but they are more often than not stories I don't care about or they are already old. Often times there is no timestamp so I have no actual idea how old a story is. I've attempted to solve this with YouTube. Finding a traditional news outlet and selecting only videos uploaded in the past 24 hours. The problem here is, the news stories are crap. They don't upload their best stuff. Also sometimes a clip that is recently uploaded was actually broadcast weeks ago, thus rendering it useless. The flip side is citizen news, which is impossible to find without first knowing what you want to watch. Redux on the Google tv somewhat solves both of my problems, but it's not ideal. It's the same content, just that someone else went out and found it
