G+_Rud Dog
Has anyone setup of SilconDust's Homerun hardware and software on a NAS was looking for input on it functionality and rating?
G+_Jason Perry
Been thinking of this for a while interested in what people have to say.
G+_Tyler Pearson
Wow what a coincidence. I just bought a new 4k TV that doesn't have a tuner and was looking at these and other solutions. Edit: I mean I'm getting one for Christmas I think. ?
G+_Rud Dog
Tyler Pearson Some of the newer sets coming out will have the Homerun app built in all you will need is the NAS server running their Homerun DVR software. Wish I had bookmarked the link to the video talking about this new addition.
G+_J Miller
I use to run that equipment in my home with Windows home server and media center. Sold it for dirt on ebay as I thought it was a dead end technology with the demise of WMC and our no longer needing tuners. It worked great. G+_Rud Dog
J Miller during my search for information ran across a mention of the ability to download WMC doesn't help you now but for others running into similar situations. As a test will attempt to load Homerun DVR software on my WD single drive NAS. Took a peak on my WD Mycloud Nas but was unable to figure out how to install this software. Now off to the WD website see if they can help.
G+_Rud Dog
There appears to be a contradiction concerning the use of SiliconDust DVR software although I thought I read somewhere you could download WMC for Windows OSs which did no longer support this program, Silicondust's website only supports Windows 10 with their HomeRun DVR software download? G+_Benjamin Webb
I run freenas with a mythtv jail. It is a pain to set up but awesome. Won't work for DRM channels like HBO, Cinnemax etc. To my knowledge the new app does not support copy once channels either and some cable providers set the flags wrong so be aware. I will not move on to the new software until it supports commercial flagging.
G+_Rud Dog
Benjamin Webb you run freenas on a PC or a NAS unit? Also going to look up mythtv jail. Thank you for the input.
G+_Jason Perry
Benjamin Webb?, your comment sums up everything I have heard about mythTV, it's awesome, and it's a pain to set up. The second part has kept me from trying. May I ask what are the issues you had to get through? Also I have heard some powered HDMI splitters will strip the DRM data from the feed. G+_Benjamin Webb
Hate to break it to you guys but a NAS is basically a dedicated server for sharing files. Not much special about it. I built my own one custom from off the shelf server parts and a Haswell Celeron. For learning mythtv I don't even know where to start. It's basically a giant database attached to a backend configuration gui and your tuner. There are just so many dam settings. I suggest try it out with a VM and build it off Ubuntu fist to get used to it. Freenas is BSD so I had to compile it from source (insanely not fun). Then it requires running the gui backend configuration so have to forward X10 app through ssh. If anybody wants to try I am happy to help but don't expect it to work right away. I then added mythweb for configuring recordings. Didn't quite get that perfect and mythweb occassionally crashes when I do things like add padding to end of recording but other than that with a Kodi front-end it is awesome. Little twitchy with my firetv stick front-end but it gets it done. A jail is basically like a VM of BSD that can run at native speed. You do have to pay schedules direct once a year for guide info which I think was like $10 yr or so. The default commercial skip is not so great so rigged it up to wake up a linux htpc I own to run comskip. Still looking to port that part over but am scared of breaking as it works perfect other than mythweb hyginx. This DRM cannot be stripped as at the cablecard level only windows media center had the secret sauce for that. Can still watch DRM stuff real-time with HD Homerun app on android. Does not work with Fire TV stick.
G+_Rud Dog
10 Dollars a year I could live with the complexity and failures not so much.
G+_Benjamin Webb
Once it works it basically never fails unless you run out of space. Have 10 TB on my NAS lol
G+_Benjamin Webb
You will pay more for the HD Homerun app for less features. Heard there was talk of getting it going with plex. Now that would be ideal.
G+_Benjamin Webb
You also would have someone to get help from so there is that in case you change your mind. I do realize I am a bit insane. Off to order parts to build my own OpenWRT X86 router. Need to feed my addiction.
