G+_Michael A. Curtis
NSA Revelations Cast Doubt on the Entire Tech Industry Turns out it was much worse than we thought. Would be interested to hear Steve Gibson discuss this on Security Now. “I think that no encryption created by anyone is going to protect you from everyone. The stronger the encryption the harder they are going to work to decrypt it,” he said. “I don’t care what company is selling you encryption software. Whatever they are going to sell you, it can be decrypted. There’s nothing that is infallible.” - David Dampier, director of the Center for Computer Security Research at Mississippi State University. “If these claims are true, and the NSA introduced backdoors into global security standards, this seems like a clear perversion of democracy,” Castro added. “This just further erodes the competitiveness of U.S. tech companies. In particular, I think this enlarges the scope of companies that will suffer backlash since cryptographic standards are often embedded in hardware.” - Daniel Castro, senior analyst with the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2013/09/tech-industry-tainted/

G+_Vin Brown
Hmm, I'd rather TWIT talked more about it, and covered it in more depth. It's certainly not a stale story, with every week bring more new revelations. It's a pinnacle moment in the history of the Internet and deserves our full attention. G+_Chuckie Canuckie
Personally I think this story is about organized political hackers that I want to protect my kids from. You think CNN or Fox would try to make me better understand what up in the real tech world? This is big around the world how taxpayers are showing the world how to wipe the backsides with the old Constitution. They lock themselves up and pen up a new one with out any hemp? Tell these unknowns not to forget to sign so history can know the names of your new forefathers.

G+_Damian Mongru
Lou Gagliardi This is no way a purely political issue. The political side was discussed quite a lot when the story was new. With more revelations the story (on the TWiT shows I listen to, at least) have covered 'what' and 'how' the NSA are carrying out their operations. These latter questions are technical. G+_Uncle Joe (Uncle Joe Hi
Damian Mongru It is in the sense that the mainstream media cannot leave their adoration for the current administration aside and report on this more, pressure this administration, and get the word out to the dumb-masses that while they're watching American Idol someone is following their online activity. Eventually, they'll be collecting video data on us and by then it will be too late!
G+_Uncle Joe (Uncle Joe Hi
Lou Gagliardi 'The hell is Faux Noise? And so Greenwald has an agenda so the story is bogus? So people are "tired" so we don't report on it? I beg to differ. The large media sites have gotten a lot of the information wrong. I've seen them conglate PRISM with backdoors into Google and Microsoft. They just don't understand it. They should do their job and learn. And where are the leftist activists so quick to "occupy" this or that? Quiet. That's where.
G+_Chuckie Canuckie
Germans tuned out till it was too late. Maybe if more were informed the infrastructure would have held up better.
G+_Damian Mongru
Lou Gagliardi I'm a bit confused here, you said that TWiT should cover it less, and that it was a political story and NOT a tech story. Again, the shows I have listened to have covered it as a technology story, for example, the Security Now episode where Steve discussed how he thought PRISM would work, talked about tapping the Internet - nothing political, just purely how would you go about it as a technical exercise. Even the shows that have tried to explain the morality of the government to do this spying have done so from a technology point of view e.g. what can you expect int terms of privacy when you post something online. TWiT moves into political territory, but I think you have explained why that happens. Also, you say that you don't care about the political aspects and then all your examples are political, or at the very least, have nothing to do with technology. e.g. saturation by the mainstream media, or Greenwald's motivations for publishing the story. Joseph Polk , Explaining how mainstream media politicises the story, has nothing to do with how TWiT should cover the story. I have acknowledged that the story has political issues, all I am saying is that the technology used is interesting, and there is no reason this can't be discussed on a technology-based network. Finally, we have the weird position of saying the 'dumb-masses' stop caring about news when they are over-saturated by it, and then saying we don't care and want to hear less about an important issue. There is a slight difference with this story in that technological news is being drip fed. First there were the original revelations, then the mention of PRISM, X-Keyscore, the recent claim they can break certain encryption methods etc. If they were all released on the sameday then things would be much quieter now. G+_Chuckie Canuckie
Lou Gagliardi I agree somewhat but some get smarter. Hope more for the good then backroom organizations with big problems getting the wrong kind of crackers doing illegal Nixon wire tappings. Best to be enlightened then blindsided by these unknowns getting good pay. Would you like a room at a bin Laden designed suite? Top well protected floor? That's what I'm talking about. Elevator Tech too the top floor. Check out the view to ponder what's up;)
G+_Damian Mongru
Lou Gagliardi I understand what you're saying. I was just trying to give reasons why: (a) it is mentioned on TWiT - it has a huge technological component; and, (b) why the story is taking so long to be revealed - it's purposefully being drip fed to us. There is a lot of manipulation by the media, and news cycles etc, but we all know how they shape what we see and what we are told, so I won't go into it here. Also, we are not a mainstream audience, so I thought we can care about this story longer than than non-technical audiences. Finally, I don't listen to the shows on TWiT that don't interest me. I'm not trying to convince someone to do something they don't want to do, but just trying to show another point of view.

G+_Wayne Brander
Vincent Brown love your post on this fascinating topic. Now, a few days later more truth emerges: http://rt.com/op-edge/nsa-spying-weakens-us-security-768/ The lead-in line of this bombshell: The NSA was no good at decrypting online communications, so they used their authority to spoil encryption technologies to get easy access to communications by people they wanted to spy on, including US citizens, Professor Mathew Green told RT.
