Long strange trip its been. Still have not recovered from my attempt to us my PC with Spinrite to check out my Tivo Hard drive.

It is hit or miss on boot up. Sometimes it boots just fine others it does not.

If it fails to boot up the only recourse is to power cycle the machine as "control-alt-delete does nothing.

This started when I was trying to get my PC to boot from the CD (spinrite) made some changes to the bios and after that have had this intermittent problem. It is on me as i didn't write down the setting before starting in bios.

There is one thing I was wondering about and that is when you boot, selecting function key F12, you are presented with choices : See Pic

How would I delete the one labeled "Windows Boot Manager cloned"?

I know it to be bad but can't delete it.

Oh before I forget the rescue approach does not fix the problem. That is the thrid item on the list in the pic.

Jason Davis The boot order has been tried in various orders, for the purpose of this post the first boot item in the bios is set to Hard Disk Drive, second item is cdrom.

Will conduct more tests with the msconfig setting in secure mode.

Thank you Jason for your input.

Paul Jenkins yeah there is something in the details I am afraid to say. Older computer booted just fine of course it was running an older BIOS version unlike the UEFI currently loaded on most computers. I am almost positive it has something to do with that fact.

I base this observation on a brand new install of Windows 8.1 with a different newly formatted drive. Setup the booting order to CDROM first, followed by Disk drive and it will not boot to the CDROM. So off I go to see if there is some information on My Gibson's website.

BTW this newly installed version of Windows 8.1 on a new drive made the intermittent boot problem go away. I think it has to do with the multiple boot managers seen by the start up sequence. Will, as a need to know project, see if I can delete the clone boot manager shown in the pic, so far nothing on how to do that or locate where they are stored.

In the BIOS GUI, you should be able to locate and edit the boot device/partition options. This may be under "storage" or "disks" or some other label, rather than under the boot options tab.

Having to change BIOS settings to boot to CD or an alternate OS can be a pain, but I've found that the easiest way to get back to the original setting on most retail PCs is to "Load optimized defaults" or similar, usually found on the last tab in the BIOS GUI.

I just sent a machine in under warranty for the second time in a year over Shutdown, Restart, and (Might)Boot problems. Of course the second time was after a firmware update that was supposed to address those same problems. My guess is the MoBo manufacturers hate Win10 as much as I do.

A word of caution to ACER Predator owners. This may apply to other PC's but can only speak to this particular unit.

After reading up online what others have done to get spinrite to boot I decided to write down the steps and see what happened. I first took pictures of all the settings in my Bios area.

In windows went to Control Panel,Power options and clicked the link, Choose what the power buttons do, and unchecked the Turn on fast startup.

In Bios:

Step One: Changed AHCI to ATA .

Step Two:Changed Secure Boot Mode state from enabled to disabled.

Then Rebooted.

Was greeted with a light blue screen which I will post a pic of, decided to go the route of just hitting restart.

Mucked up my other drive as stated earlier by going with the alternative option shown in the pick so this time it was restart and all went well as far as getting back to my original Windows OS.

Never got the CD rom to boot.

Ken Jancef The boot sequence is what is important if you want to boot from the cdrom you simply place it in the first slot of the booting sequence in front of the Hard drive.

That was the case for the older bios not so for the new type bios. If you have a system and wish to see what many are seeing just for the heck of it put in a CD and try to boot from it you will be alarmingly surprised how things have changed.

As for me I have resolved my issues with my system just posting in case some other poor soul runs into this problem.

I guess if I needed an answer to anything it would be the multiple boot devices in the list and how to remove the one with the word "Clone" in it. See pic.

I don't know about these new motherboards but I do remember there used to be a BIOS reset jumper you can try and also if I remember correctly spinrite needs to run on Legacy BIOS not UEFI. Also, on my computer I have to turn off loading BIOS into ram and run it from ROM to be able to boot external devices.
