G+_Rud Dog
My experience with esata is lacking what I would like to do is add an external drive to my Tivo. On the back of the Tivo is a esata connection. In the instructions, it is stated to use estata cable on both ends and not esata to USB. What should I shop for obviously the cable but what are the requirements for the drive assuming the drive is a standard SATA drive in an estata enclosure? G+_Travis Hershberger
Any esata drive exclosure, cable, and standard drive should work. Nothing special needed. The only thing is that the TiVo will format it with a proprietary format, so don't try to move it to another system.
G+_Golden Retriever
Yes it hides the partition, I read a thread about running spinright on a failing disk and they had to use some sort of Unix command in order to show the partition
G+_Robert Hafer
I also seem to recall that their is s limit to the size of the external disk based on the TiVo's firmware. I have , in the past, added a 2Tb drive without problem; newer TiVo may have bigger limit.
G+_Rud Dog
Just came from the Tivo site and connecting and disconnecting the drive have a strict order. Going to pick up the enclosure and cable and using one of my smaller drives test the theory before makeing it permenant. Thanks for the input. G+_Rud Dog
Found this cable and was wondering if the "Type1" is important to the selection process. G+_Travis Hershberger
That's a standard eSATA cable, Type 1 to Type 1 is the type of connector in use, and that should be what you want. Does the enclosure you chose not include one?
G+_Rud Dog
Travis Hershberger Still reviewing the dizzying array of enclosures. Thanks for the clarification on the Type 1 info. Trying to find information on whether or not the Tivo can power an SSD or if I need a powered enclosure.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Rud Dog I don't think eSATA provides device power, just enough for the bus. So I'd go with a powered case.
G+_Golden Retriever
That's a good question as SSD use very little power unlike a spinning disk.
G+_bryant thompson
you'll need a powered case, but I just saw that your TiVo drive is dying, weaknees.com - TiVo Superstore | Upgraded TiVo DVRs, Remotes, Parts, Repairs has drives that are formatted exactly what you need for your model of TiVo. I have a roamio and a premier each with 4tb drives in them! I store whole seasons for later binge watching.
