Normally, files are sent via attachment or pictures within the email displaying each pic

Why not ask the sender? and ask them why the extension is .jp instead of .jpg. If they had sent them as .jpg you might not have had the problem.

 

Alternately, you might be able to set the Default Applications on your computer for a .jp extension to open in something like Paint or whatever.
