G+_Brad Leonard
Unless you apply for credit often, an inexpensive and effective way of securing yourself from ID theft is with a credit freeze ( http://goo.gl/RYdmhp ). It is a bit inconvenient to have to access a credit reporting agency (CRA) and pay for a temporary unfreeze, but it's cheaper than a month of credit monitoring. Plus, protection services put "advisory" warnings on your account, which still allow companies to access the data and potentially grant credit. A freeze totally stops access to your data. For protecting against card compromise, CreditKarma is free and does a good job of monitoring your current accounts to detect potential compromise. ChexSystems.com is not a CRA, but many banks check them before opening an account. You can also freeze your information there for free.
