G+_Rud Dog
Great episode on Synology NAS. Keep them coming, find it interesting what this device can do.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Almost all NAS boxes are just some sort of custom Linux distribution, processors can be ARM or x86 compatible. Synology just does a much better job of exposing those capabilities.
G+_Randy Widell
Indeed. I've spent a while trying to figure out the best way to replace CrashPlan Home and just settled on having all computers backup to my NAS and have Synology Hyper Backup backup the files to Azure. Literally just put this into action last week, and here's an episode about doing just that.
G+_Rud Dog
Does the data backup live in the cloud encrypted?
G+_Randy Widell
Yes. Azure has a default encryption mode that is free, but Microsoft controls the keys. You can generate your own 2048-bit RSA keys for $0.03 per 10,000 operations. 4096-bit keys are $0.15 per 10,000 operations. The keys are stored in your Azure Key Vault. I haven't looked into what kind of access MS has to those keys, so encrypting files as they are copied to the NAS is probably the most secure option.
