One question I forgot to ask about the synology NAS; Does it have a sleep mode when not being accessed? My Drobo is constantly powered on and you can hear the fan it would be nice if the synology powered down and only did a wake up when needed or accessed?

Depends if you have certain programs installed. Plex for an example will make the NAS always powered on. Prior to installing Plex it went into power saver on drives.

That's interesting.... Plex scans periodically for added media. I wonder if disabling the scan would let the drives sleep again?

I don't think it will stop it from sleeping. Because Plex phones home to the Plex server for remote access.. maybe if the remote access is also turned off.

I’ve been running Plex on the NAS for a while now and I never even noticed it didn’t spin down. Mind you, the NAS at our place is tucked away in the basement where it is about as unobtrusive as it can be. I haven’t noticed anything amiss with it, but now this is making me wonder if I’m shortening the lifespan of my drives. Hm.

It depends on the drives, some drives wear faster if they are spun up and spun down frequently. Most enterprise/NAS drives are designed and expected to run 24/7/365ish.

Gene Hill well I currently have two western digital red drives and 1 Ironwolf Drive. Both brands are supposed to be good for NAS. I guess we’ll see which ones die first. ?

My Synology DS214 has a sleep mode, depends on the settings.
