G+_Rud Dog
As for the cord cutting experience, all was fine until this month. Recordings taken over the air are fine. The streaming channels recorded are beginning to stall, stop and just make it hard to watch the video in this condition. I am thinking my bandwidth from my ISP has changed. Need to find tools that are reliable for checking so I can make my case with the ISP. Any suggestions?
G+_Joe Valasko
I don's have any suggestions but I experience the same thing with DirectTV Now recordings and some live streams. It was suggested to me that Comcast is limiting my bandwidth as the cause. I just don't know of any tools to measure that and challenge Comcast with real data. G+_Ben Reese
I had network dropouts when I first moved to this house. To collect data for that, I used a ping script they returned the timestamp and normal ping data.
G+_Black Merc
The ISP has that long contract(that no one reads) that you agreed to and your stuck with what they give you. The same for gas prices... Until real competition is allowed in this world, we are just out of luck.
G+_J Miller
My ISP has a speed test on their web site. Doubt they would argue with their own results.
G+_Patrick C
What application are you using? I leverage a pay service the principal is the same as using a VHS with live TV. It just spins up a windows (browser that is invisible). PlayOn is the app. Now I had similar issues with throttling and overall I agree with everyone on the above. You can stage and setup recording times, this has proved to be a much better experience for me. I run my jobs at 10pm-6am local time. Now if your issue is doing live TV then if you pay for cable most paid channels allow free login others require more payments which blows my mind. If you can create a login your set. I am using Plex to record OTA with a HDHomerun. I cut cable a long time ago and haven't looked back. Game of thrones let's say, I pay the $10 bucks a month to get HBO Go then cancel it. Saves me in the long run.
G+_Rud Dog
While watching recorded over the air content there is no problem. Same holds true for watching live Netflix or amazon prime videos. As for the HD Homerun Premium TV service, it is poor viewing quality by that I mean skips, jerky, and freezes from time to time. Looking back for about a month at the recorded videos from the Premium Service they were also ok. It is the most recent videos under the same service that has the problems. My home router has a way of displaying download speeds and it went from over a 3 digit number to a 2 digit number. Don't know what that means but can see something has changed for the worse. Not sure why it is affecting the HDHR-Service and not Netflix or Amazon?
G+_John Sullivan
I'm not clear on what you are calling recorded. Are you saying that the shows you record from the streaming channels are stuttering when you play them back? Maybe leave out the "recorded" part for now. If you watch a live show there's no problem, right? If you watch a streaming show (whether you're recording it or not) is there a problem? If so, the problem is live vs. streaming, is that right? If that's true, then I would not expect bandwidth to be the cause.
G+_Rud Dog
John Sullivan OTA is great, Netflix and Amazon Prime the same. HDHR Premium service not so good Live or recorded; shot off an email to HDHomeRun Support.
G+_Ben Reese
Rud Dog I haven't looked into HDHR Premium, but it sounds like that records to their servers instead of your own? If that's the case and you're getting poor recording, you may need to look at your upload speeds instead of download. For what I do, I have to focus more on the upload speeds. You can stream HD to 5 devices just fine with 20~50 Mbps service, but they bundle with that service 2 Mbps or less. If you're getting less than 2 Mbps upstream, than it may not be fast enough to reliably record to the "cloud".
G+_Rud Dog
Ben Reese The recordings both OTA and Premium are stored on my NAS. The more I watch Youtube the more I see some buffering as well. So it might point back at the bandwidth. Which when I started this setup all were just fine it is the last month the problems started. Might have to make a trip down to the ISP and see what is going on.
G+_Rud Dog
Update. After searching the web for answers or help concerning my lack of bandwidth I stumbled onto my ISPs web site. I logged on and started reviewing all that could be found. One section labeled "troubleshooting your speed" was found. It supposed to review your connection and check it. Well, I felt like I was dealing with the man behind the curtain but went ahead and tried it. One thing I noticed it did while running a check on my connection was restarting my modem. After about 5 minutes of running, it was finished. To my surprise, the problem was gone. Now, this has only been about a 30-minute review but had no lagging video. Will update if this is not a long-term fix. I am currently running one premium channel and a youtube video and no lag.
G+_Patrick C
Ah yes Rud Dog . Monthly or quarterly reboots of equipment will definitely help. I disagree with people who say never touch it. I have even seen situations where removing the coax and reconnecting helping. What your ISP did was most likely send what's called a magic packet to cause the reboot. Another suggestion I would say is running speedtest.net to see if the numbers you pay for match. If you get more than your supposed to, keep quiet. If not, then complain and ask why. As for the other part of some services working better than others. That is the issue that net neutrality would solve. Below is a good read on it on wired. https://www.wired.com/story/guide-net-neutrality/ speedtest.net - Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test
G+_Rud Dog
Rud Dog The problem has gone away. Will need to remember the website so I can do it again if needed. Of course, this troubleshooting section is within a sign in section so you will need an account to access their tool. The ISP in my case is Comcast. G+_Daniel Stagner
I set up a rasPi0W to do a speed test every hour. The setup can be found below. Its out put looks like this. I also use the same pi to keep track of my home IP address with a tweek to the code. The output is sent direct to a google docs file. G+_Ben Reese
Daniel Stagner that is awesome! I'll be setting this up on a Linux VM. Linux projects like this are some of the best things to come from the Raspberry Pi.
G+_Daniel Stagner
Ben Reese I am sure it will work on Debian. But you just need to make sure that the distor you use has all the required packages. And if not manually install them prior to setup. Also your version of python matters but I am not sure why. 3.somthing should work. 2.7 had problems that I did not try to fix. My xpenology box has the VM rasPi for x64 running on it. I have quite a few of the IP address ones active now to help my family with tech support. Parents house, wife's parent's house, sisters house. I also have set up several for friends who want to access their surveillance video from their cabins/boats on public wifi. The pi0W is very cheap and the way to go most of the time. Not to mention you can use similar code and the embedded camera to upload its photos to Google.
G+_Jason Brown
Silly question, maybe it was asked/answered and I missed it. But is the problem device on WiFi, or is it wired?

G+_Rud Dog
Jason Brown Turns out it had to do with my connection I say this after going to the ISP site and finding a tool they recommend you try. And I did. All I know from watching my modem is it resets the modem and does some other stuff. I don't know what but 5 minutes later I opened up my video feed and all was well with the entertainment world again.
G+_Black Merc
Rud Dog if you need to run that tool again, wireshark the rj-45 to detect exactly what it is doing... I can only assume it was a windows 'exe' tool, it would be nice to have that function for other OS'es.
G+_Rud Dog
Black Merc Don't really know if it is a windows "exe" tool. The tools were run from a website via a button I believe.
G+_Ben Reese
Not sure who Rud Dog has for an isp, but Spectrum has a button on site to "Rest My Modem". I really haven't had many problems with router or modem since I separated them and started running an OpenWRT router.
