G+_Steven Atkinson
Do you have another computer with a VGA output that you could use to test the VGA to HDMI convertor? According to the description on Amazon, the USB plug is for power, did you plug it in to an active USB socket, another computer or a USB charger? G+_Rud Dog
Steven Atkinson Thank you for replying. I do have another older computer which will allow me to conduct the test you suggest and will drag it out dust it off and give that test a go. Yes, I connected the USB to both a computer and a wall socket USB connection and no difference in the results. On another note, I tested the connection from the G3 through an adaptor into a VGA port on an older monitor and it worked fine. So far have not been able to get the HDMI input to work. Forget to mention I also used to different flatscreen monitors for testing in case I was dealing with a bad HDMI port.
G+_William L. DeRieux IV
Rud Dog You said that you tested G3 to VGA and it worked (this confirms that the DB15 to HD15 adapter works). But have you tried using the HD15 VGA to HDMI adapter with modern-day VGA source and HDMI port ? (If not, it might be possible that the HDMI adapter is DOA, or has some other issue). It could be an issue with the resolution -- you might need to try other dip switch settings.
G+_Rud Dog
William L. DeRieux IVThe adapter indeed works no problems there. The other test which I will just show a pic of also worked fine.
G+_Rud Dog
Sadly what doesn't work is this part and I am not sure why?
G+_William L. DeRieux IV
Rud Dog Well, then I believe one of the following is the issue: 1) The resolution set by the dip switches is causing an issue 2) The G3's vga port might have some problem with producing a strong enough signal (or is not the right voltage) to drive the adapter. I mean you have made sure that all adapters work correctly... So the problem, by elimination, must be some interaction between those two adapters. G+_Rud Dog
Here is the first of the summary tests conducted. This worked fine. To clarify my goal want to use a monitor only having HDMI inputs.
G+_Rud Dog
William L. DeRieux IV What I am left wondering if the setting(Dip Switch) where the VGA input was displaying correctly shouldn't those same settings work for the HDMI input. If this is true then your theory on the voltage levels is all that remains.
G+_William L. DeRieux IV
Rud Dog Possibly, however, it might be that the resolution coming from the G3 is not supported by the HDMI adapter. If you just can't get this to work then you might want to consider upgrading the PCI graphics card in the G3 mac to one that has a dvi/hdmi port. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7211769?start=0&tstart=0 https://www.ebay.com/i/172961778987?chn=ps&dispctrl=
G+_Rud Dog
Wow that is a great price to eliminate some big headaches lets see how I fare with that board. Would you happen to know if PCI video card from PC would work in the PowerMac G3?
G+_Rud Dog
Forehead rocking back and forth on my desk. When I started looking at the Video cards for the PowerMac g3 found out I know very little about the motherboard. There are three slots which look like standard PCI slots and one dark brown slot housing what looks like an odd video card or a sound card. The one you linked Apple Mac G4 G5 ATI Radeon 7000 PCI 64MB Video Card DVI VGA S-VideoTV-Out OS9 _3 Doesn't call out the G3 so left wondering what cards will work with the G3? Do they need to specifically call out the G3 or did the motherboard stay the same for G3, G4 and G5? Here is a look at what my motherboard kinda looks like:
G+_William L. DeRieux IV
Rud Dog The 3x white slots are 32-bit PCI slots. The 1x brown slot is a PERCH slot (for somekind of I/O card, audio, video, etc). The ATI Radeon 7000 PCI 64MB Video Card is a 32-bit PCI card and it should be compatible with a G3. pccardfaq.com - pccardfaq.com/manuals/powermac_g3_desktop.pdf http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-power-mac-g3-prices.html
G+_Rud Dog
William L. DeRieux IV Great to come into the community and find more servings of goodies to read and learn. Sometimes it takes a second eye to find search topics. Thank you for the direction. The reason for keeping this dinosaur has to do with software loaded on it and the cost to re-purchase it. I did think about removing the hard drive and moving it to a step up Apple product but the logistics of such a move stopped me in my tracks. Although the cost might warrant this possibility. Off I go to read the linked materials.

G+_Rud Dog
William L. DeRieux IV Looks like a nice card but one thing stood out as a questionable buy. The PCI slot had one edge connector with one divider and the card show three separate sections as if for an edge connector with there separate sections. G+_William L. DeRieux IV
Rud Dog Your 32-bit PCI slots on the motherboard are 5V slots, but that ATI card has a universal edge connector that can be inserted into either a 3.3V or 5V slot. https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoypizjW3WknFiJnKLwHCnL72vedxjQkDDP1mXWo6uco/I/m/PCI_Keying.svg.png#ActualImage
G+_Rud Dog
William L. DeRieux IV OK found a video card in my spare but old PC thought I would compare the edge connector to the link you added. Maybe you can look at this one and clear up what kind of card it is I searched on Google and some cards with the same numbers came up but without the Fan. The onboard name was: Radeon X300SE 256MB V/D/DO Hyper Memory.
G+_William L. DeRieux IV
Rud Dog That's a PCI Express x16 video card (which won't work in your G3) https://www.cnet.com/products/powercolor-radeon-x300-se-graphics-card-radeon-x300-se-128-mb-series/specs/
G+_William L. DeRieux IV
Rud Dog These are the differences between PCI-32bit, 64bit, PCI-Express x1-x32, and AGP. a>
G+_Rud Dog
Okay, now I am convinced the slot in my Apple product is indeed a 5V video card. And as pointed out there are cards accommodating both 3.3 and 5V connections. Now, will go back to all the links in this listing to find any candidates, beings the first and third cards shown below will be OK.
G+_William L. DeRieux IV
Rud Dog Yes the first one is universal and the last card is 5V. Your best bet is to go with either an 1) ATI Radeon 7000 (PCI/64MB) 2) ATI Radeon 9200 (PCI/128MB) make sure they have been re-programmed to work on the mac. Personally, based on reports found through google I would shoot for the ATI 7000.
G+_Rud Dog
William L. DeRieux IV Took the link you posted and purchased the board for a reasonable price. The board came in plugged it in and nothing. Used the DVI to HDMI setup. Contacted the selling and his response: "eBay New message from: boonsiebaby70 (360Turquoise Star) Are you using g4 Mac.. that’s what I tested it on?" Does this mean it will only work on a G4 or G5? ebay.com - Apple Mac G4 G5 ATI Radeon 7000 PCI 64MB Video Card DVI VGA S-VideoTV-Out OS9 _3 | eBay
G+_William L. DeRieux IV
Rud Dog The ATI Radeon 7000 should be compatible with a PowerMac G3. The PC version of the card has a 64k ROM, but the mac requires a 128k rom. You can use a reduced version of the ROM on the 64K. All of these steps are outlined here: https://ateliershiori.moe/2015/03/upgrading-a-powermac-g3-bw-with-a-pc-ati-radeon-7000-pci-card/ The seller of the card didn't tell you what the firmware ROM size was (not if it had been flashed properly for a Mac), but you could try the steps above to work with a reduced-size ROM. It is entirely possible that out of the '510' boards sold -- I find it difficult to believe that 510 boards have 'worked perfectly' -- that this one is dead. You can verify this is you had an old PC to put the card into -- and check if it works there. PS: Here's another with a 128K ROM that has already been converted to work (for $34.98 and is a Sapphire branded card) https://www.local338shop.com/products/ati-radeon-7000-64mb-pci-video-card-for-apple-powermac-g3-g4-g5-xserve?variant=21768049543
