G+_Rud Dog
Need to do a sanity check posted this in some other community? Just copied my MP4 files onto USB stick carried the files to my Roku and found only some play others report an error. Didn't get a pic of the error as it was late and was laying back and trying to enjoy some tech videos. Some I created and some I downloaded from Youtube. Is there a fix-it program I can run on the failing files? Some of the files that fail on the Roku do not fail on my PC?
G+_Marc T Zicari
Roku reports that drm files will fail, but they also gave a link to use handbrake to convert files to accepted formats. forums.roku.com - Handbrake Encoding Settings for USB Channel - Roku Forums
G+_Damien Wessling
Rudd, it could be an encoding issue or a corruption issue. The Roku may not recognise the encoding of the MP4 files. Which files play? The ones from YouTube or the ones you've created? If the YouTube files are the ones playing, I'd suggest your software may be saving to an MP4 with a codec unfamiliar to the Roku. If you're happy that you've played both formats previously, try using a different USB to copy the files, the one being used may be failing. G+_Todd Barnard
I've had this with audio on MKV files too, seving them to the Roku via Serviio. If they don;t play, I use Avidemux to copy video and change the audio. I have had issues with Mp4s too, and re-encode the same program or lately Vidcoder. It works pretty fast. vidcoder.net - Home | VidCoder If it will play in VLC, then I re-encode. If not, I assume its corrupt and re-download. G+_Rud Dog
The learning experience is always welcomed and this is what this was you see I had no idea the dot-extension of an mp4 file, does not mean the internal workings are all created using the same encoders/decoders. Thank you all for your input. Now to try some of the suggestions.
G+_Rud Dog
Todd Barnard Can you verify you are having no problems?
G+_Rud Dog
Damien Wessling In a nutshell, the files downloaded from youtube one works great while the others in the same series do not. I am currently trying to use Handbrake but running into some difficulties in batch conversion. Found some instructions and trying each author's approach, maybe one will solve this problem. G+_Rud Dog
Turns out the problem I was experiencing was due to the files being converted to M4V and there is a setting under Tools-->preferences allowing for the conversion to be changed from Auto to MP4 only. That solved that problem. Running the batch as I type and will report if the batch fails to complete.
G+_Ben Reese
I don't have a Roku, so didn't respond a couple days ago. But I agree that Handbrake should get you fixed up. I frequently use FFMPEG to convert video files, but it can be very tedious getting all the command line options set. My guess would be h264 for video and AAC for audio. MP3 audio should also work, but most files I see now are AAC. Good luck!
