G+_Rud Dog
Continue to suffer from vision loss. Have a catch 22. Picked up a larger screen for my computer allowing me to zoom in and out while surfing the web. This works great. Here is the catch 22. When viewing my desktop the icons and fonts are to small and hard to read. This is amplified when the screen is used at a higher resolution. This is a nice feature so don't want to turn down that setting. There is a feature in Windows 8.1 allowing you to "magnify" the screen but it is really more of an annoyance than useful. Have worked with this feature but grow tired of its bad design(in my opinion). Changing the font and icon size doesn't help either so that does not solve my dilemma. Is there no program, app or feature out there allowing for the zooming in of the screen the same way you can zoom into a web page? The ability to zoom in with the mouse on a web page is perfect and really useful but not available for the desktop of Windows 8.1 or is it? Here is how this looks to me pretty hard to read. G+_Douglas Biggers
I don't know where it's hidden in 8.1, but in 10 you can adjust your dpi in Control panel>Display under Scale and Layout. It will reduce the overall practical size of windows, and potentially mess up anything that relies on accurate measurements, but should scale everything up to where you need it. G+_Akira Yamanita
The scaling option might be helpful but it’s not meant for zooming in and out. It’s more like changing the resolution without sacrificing detail. The magnifier is the accessibility feature for that purpose. I know someone who is legally blind who uses it in the docked mode. You lose some usable desktop space, but you don’t have to switch in and out and anything by the cursor is always readable. I’m guessing that you’ve tried full screen mode. It narrows the field of vision instead of just scaling everything up, which is what I assume the part that you don’t like. I’ve seen some video drivers with system tray programs that let you cycle through resolutions with hotkeys. That’s about as close as you can get, I think. G+_Rud Dog
Magnifier is not really something I can live with I use it when I absolutely have to but avoid it when I can. As for scaling will have to see if that is available in window 8.1 then take a test ride. Will have to see about finding that hotkey option you mention. G+_Douglas Biggers
Also look into the high contrast themes. a black font in a small size on a white background is much harder to see than whit on black.
G+_Rud Dog
Douglas Biggers Sounds like a viable option will have to try it.
G+_Joshua Hamlett
Sounds like your new screen has higher resolution, which normally makes everything smaller. To compensate for this, you will want to lower the DPI of your display settings to make everything normal sized again. You can still zoom in & out as much as you like on the web pages. But the windows desktop pretty much stays a constant size using the native software.
