Hi guys, I have a quick question I'm trying to find out what everyone out there does to back up there stuff. I have a FreeNAS box with 3 terabyte drives raidz. But I want to back up my stuff off-site and ideas on how to do that, or how everyone else does it like btsync but I what it to be secure and safe.

Synology NAS. I use the DS1515+ currently w/ 8TB of space. Interface is easy to work with, and it is expandable! For off-site use a cloud provider such as BackBlaze which the Synology will sync will on a daily basis

I have a Synology NAS as well. Been really interested in Qnap lately though.

First of all, raidz = RAID 5 = not recommended unless you're using all SSD, or ok loosing the data. Ref: https://mangolassi.it/topic/7516/you-cant-afford-raid-5

 

I user BackBlaze B2 personally, but you may be better off using BackBlaze's (or another providers) standard all-you-can-store backup plan.

I'm still on the old CrashPlan home service, but am hoping I can make my own off-site backup using Duplicati and NAS somewhere else. Backblaze would probably be the way to go if you can afford it - just outside my comfortable spending limit.

I'm with you Ben I'm trying to do this on the cheap I have other old PC that I can use to build stuff with just not cash on hand to pay for services. and when I said safe and secure I meant transmission wise location to location.

Ricardo Reis if you have another old PC, you may check out the Xpenology project. It runs on old hardware better than FreeNAS does, I believe. I now have it on a 10 year old Core 2 Quad and an Athlon II / AM3 system.
