G+_Tom Kudla
Newbie soldering questions: I am working on the Alien-X quad project. What type of solder should I be using? I don't know if what I am looking at in Lowes or Home depot is appropriate. Also, Fr. Robert was wearing black safety gloves. Does anyone know what type they were and where I can buy them? G+_610GARAGE
No. That is meant for plumbing. You need to get rosin core solder. This is what I use for pcb soldering. Its a little thin for soldering heavy gauge wire, but it will still work. http://www.amazon.com/Kester-Pocket-Pack-Solder-0-031/dp/B00068IJNQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1429035553&sr=8-3&keywords=rosin+core+solder
G+_Eddie Foy
Rosin core is best by FAR. Both, rosin core and acid core (plumber's) ARE acidic. You can use plumber's solder, but better do a GOOD flux cleaning. I wouldn't use it for chips and such to PCBs, but in a pinch OK for wires. I'm on the fence with lead free (along with no-clean) I've had mixed results. Thickness depends on what you are doing. But .032-.062 should suffice most hobbyists. G+_Taylor Graham
Since you're new, make sure you get leaded solder. It's much easier to work with. Just grab any 60/40 rosin core. The solder 610bob linked to is great.
G+_DeWayne Shorts
The black gloves you Can find at home Depot but... You don't need them to solder. Those were just for the closeups while filming.
