Hey anyone familiar with VMWARE Agent? My workplace uses it and I know they are able to remote control my Ipad. I know prior to installing it it mentioned they had access to my apps, texts, e-mails, and can remote wipe the device. This is why I do not use it on my phone. I am wondering if I send messages via iMessage will they be able to read my messages or is it encrypted? Also I do have a VPN via IpVanish, but I assume they will still see everything even with the VPN turned on.

If you mean VMWare AirWatch, they do not have access to SMS or iMessage. Apps can be seen by MDM solution, although I'm not sure if AirWatch makes that available. Things like call history, SMS, and most other personal data is not visible to MDM solutions or any other app in iOS. On Android, access is possible but can be disabled. Other items that a regular app can access such as contacts, location, etc. would have to be granted permission just like any other app. They definitely don't have access to the data flowing across the network (unless you're on their network either directly or by VPN). Also, remote control is not possible on an iOS unless they've given you a rooted device. Have you actually seen them do this?

Akira Yamanita? had things right. The VMware blog had a good post about it. (Link below)

My concern would be if you had to drop off the device and give them full access while it it's out of your sight, that would raise questions.

An MDM can handle things like deploying an app to all employees, gathering data on which OS /version (and things such as security updates) is installed, and the like.

We use Meraki Device Manager on mobile, and on PCs that have VPN access. Also, on iOS especially, apps are strongly sandboxed from looking at each other. If concerned about things like iMessage/SMS consider specialty apps like Signal or Wire (granted, iMessage is pretty robust in security and privacy, as mentioned before).

Hope this helps.
