G+_Neil Tsubota
I like Episode #62 with Scott Wilkinson explaining sound for home theaters. Can anyone explain "tos" connectors for audio. Do I plug "tos" cords from my flat screen tv to my sound system, or my 'set-top' box. Please explain the advantages/disadvantages of these connections. Thanks Neil
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
"TOS" or "TOSLINK is "Toshiba Link" - It's a standards-based optical connection system dating back to 1983 that allows you to transmit digital audio over fiber media. Both TOS and coaxial RCA transmit the same S/PDIF signal, but fiber is immune to EMI and can be run over longer distances than coax. Many audiophiles swear by TOS for those reasons. G+_Bill Crowe
There is no encoding difference between Toslink fiber and SPDIF coax. The only real advantage (aside from EMI stated in the previous post) is since fiber is electrically no conductive, it will not cause any ground loops or ground differentials. Even these advantages usually will not make any difference unless you have analog connections in your system.
