I don't believe that either Bryan or myself use 3rd party AV software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is all you really need. Don't bother with any 3rd party stuff that would just suck background resources.

Do keep in mind as well, an antivirus can only do so much. You must also have best practices in mind for internet use to ensure you avoid infection. I.E., trusted sources, not opening /unexpected/ attachments, etc.

Antivirus is like the seatbelt and airbag in your car.  Doesn't mean you can crash the car with impunity.

 

Free is worth what you pay for it. Try AVG or Avast and see how you get on. 

 

Check out Kaspersky AV for a lower cost pay option. The 3 PC licences are good value especially if you search online for the best prices.

 

Avoid all "Internet Security" type products.
