G+_Riley Plays
Hey i recently made a post about this a while back... that my pc wasn't booting, after i posted the post the computer posted...haha see what i did there. Well now my dell shows a solid amber light apon startup. When i turn on the power supply the pc automatically tries to boot without me pressing the button. I can hear the hard drive spin up so i think its the power supply. Any opinions about my choice would be very helpful because i don't want to drop $60 on a new psu if i don't need it THANKS
G+_Ben Reese
2 things to try... Check BIOS and make sure you don't have the option selected to automatically turn on when power is connected. Should be off by default, but it's possible to change accidentally. If that's not the issue, disconnect the 24-pin connector from the motherboard. If it still boots on its own, I'd replace the power supply.
G+_Stu Iaukea
Did you add any hardware to your PC recently? If you did, I'm thinking your power supply can't handle the load.

G+_Stu Iaukea
I'd reseat the RAM and video card, disconnect the unnecessary peripherals leaving only the main hardrive/video card/keyboard/mouse connected, then boot the system. This will help narrow down the cause.
G+_Arcturus Lancaster
Also pull network cable. Occasionally things go wrong and network has enough power to keep something alive.

G+_John Sullivan
As the power indicator light on the monitor is amber, that would indicate that the monitor is not receiving a video signal from the computer, which is correct as you have not pressed the power supply switch on the power supply yet. Once you do press the switch you can hear the hard drive spin up, but I don't understand why you think that would indicate that the power supply is bad ... I would think just the opposite. As Ben said, computers are often set in BIOS to reboot when the power is restored after a power failure. If you can get the computer to boot and are able to get into Windows, do a normal shutdown. Leave the power switch on the power supply alone. Now press the regular On button and see if the computer starts up. If it does, be ready to press whatever keys you need to to go into the BIOS and turn off that reboot on power up function. (if you miss it, do it again) Once you have that disabled, try shutting down and restarting the computer normally a few times and let us know what happens. G+_Eric Boyle
Dell power supplies most the time have a self check switch on them where the power cable plugs in. S Little button. If you have the psu plugged in powered on press and hold the button. If you do not get a green light on the back of the power supply by the button you push, the power supply is definitely defective. G+_Eric Boyle
This doesn't help much but an amber light could also mean a bad processor or a bad motherboard. Lol. Not much to check there huh?? But I would reseat the processor. Take heatsink off, gently remove processor, blow out socket, reinstall. I do warranty work for Dell at my job and this is the 3 things Dell has us try. It is most likely a power supply. Do you have any error leds on the front or rear of chassis? Usually 4 leds, label 1,2,3,
G+_Eric Boyle
If so, they should light up in a pattern and you can check dell support site for what they indicate is wrong
