Hey guys quick question

The fact that they both work in the BIOS menus indicates that the problem is not the keyboard or mouse. If you plug them into USB 3.1 ports and they don't work, do you have USB 2.0 ports that you can try them in? The USB 3.1 ports should be "backwards compatible", so if your devices don't work in them, perhaps you don't have 3.1 drivers for the ports installed? Look in Device Manager for any indication that something is wrong.

Agreed on the 3.0, they can be wonky. Input devices are better in the other ones.

I have one PC where the 3.0 drivers crash from time to time, so I only tend to use it when moving files to/from removable storage.

If you have a different keyboard and mouse, try them to get logged in, then plug in the original set in.

Marcus and Giligain have the right of it. You'd think USB would be a little more reliable, given how ubiquitous it is these days.

• #huh, I did not know that motherboards typically include the connection

I found this topic discussed only 2 years ago!

Actually, motherboard makers had pretty much stopped including them for a while, but thye've made a comeback thanks to professional gaming. PS/2 has much lower latency than USB for mouse/keyboard inputs, so it's generally preferred by gamers who want perfectly instant input.

• but according to wiki, this ps2 port has been considered a legacy port superseded by the USB...since 2000'ish.

• so...the connection may not be typically on the exterior, but maybe inside; I don't know if this is as true for laptops.
