G+_tptwk
I am looking for some hard drive recommendations. I have an old ZT desktop computer I purchased from Costco 6 years ago. It came with Vista installed but included a free Win 7 upgrade disk which is what I am running now. It has had little or no problems. It has recently slowed down significantly. I know part of the reason is my HD is completely full and it is just old. I am preparing to wipe the HD back to factory settings but have noticed the HD is getting very loud. I was wondering if I should replace/upgrade the HD or not bother and just do the wipe? I found blue and green WD HD's on Amazon for about $50 but not sure what the difference is. Any recommendations out there or am I wasting my time and just need to buy new? Can I get a few more years out of it? Any tutorials on this would be great. G+_Travis Hershberger
WD Blue drives are their "general purpose" line and the Green drives are their "power saving" models. If being used for a desktop then Blue is probably the better type of drive to buy. Also, yes, replace that drive as it's most likely living on borrowed time already! G+_Ben Reese
The whole system will feel better than new if you go with SSD.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Ben Reese Good point. That drive is probably old enough you could replace it with an SSD for not much more money than a HDD tptwk. I warn you ahead of time, once you go SSD you never go back. G+_Jason Marsh
I'd add that a weekly or monthly maintenance routine is easy enough to build and schedule. Since setting up my Win7 and Vista machines with one they have been AbFab. I haven't looked into automating a ninite installer, but that would be excellent for keeping the standard load of miscellaneous apps updated without the periodic nags from them individually. G+_Travis Hershberger
Jason Marsh With ninite all you have to do is keep the initial download and re-run it periodically. It's really a very nice tool. Which reminds me that I need to look into the subscription service they offer when I get a free minute at work (I joke, I don't have anything like a free minute.) G+_Jason Marsh
I'm thinking more like a scheduled task that runs without user input.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Jason Marsh Yep, just add a time for the download to run in Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Task Scheduler
G+_Ben Reese
I've don't the scheduled task thing for stuff that needs to stay updated but I don't use often - like Firefox and Java.
