G+_Brian Goossen
Sleep deprived twin Dad looking for suggestions… Goal: Backup 2 macs and photos to older PC. I’m wanting to use an old XP box (Win 7 currently installed, Pentium4 3GHz, 2gb RAM, 80gb & 100gb HDs) for Time Machine backup for 2 Mac laptops and server/backup for photos over local wifi network. Backup of photos on PC will be to Amazon Prime photo storage. I just had twin girls so my photos just got much more important and i need to get better about backing up in general. Budget goal: $100 (max $200) [bonus points for being able to show photos on TV in other room (have Chromecast).] THANKS!!!
G+_Ben Reese
Congrats on the new dad! I've got 3 kids so I understand the importance of photos. I'd recommend online backup ultimately, but Amazon is probably fine for now. If you also use Google Photos backup (there's a backup utility for Windows and probably Mac too), Chromecast will be super easy. Google Plus photos is free if you let them compress your photos, but they still look great with their compression. For local network backup, CrashPlan let's you use their application for free on P2P backups. BTSync also works well. You can throw Plex on your backup server for added functionality sharing on the local network. For storage on the PC, I'd just get a 3 TB drive (if that's big enough for your needs). G+_Travis Hershberger
I'll second CrashPlan for P2P backups. I've got my parent's computer backing up to mine over the internets. It's free, and I can restore files easily. After all, if you can't restore the files you don't really have a backup.
G+_Brian Goossen
Awesome Guys, Thanks!!! CrashPlan looks great. Finding the download was tough and it's very hidden that backups to another computer are free. Here's the download link for anyone else reading this. https://www.code42.com/crashplan/thankyou/ Also, looks like Plex will play nice with the Chromecast so I will definitely try that too. https://plex.tv/downloads https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201206866-Cast-from-Browser-or-Desktop THANKS AGAIN!
