So I picked up the Synology DS415+ and I'm trying to set up my backup of the NAS 3/2/1. I have a few external WD USB drives I used to run the SmartWare app on my desktop and rotate off site once a week. I really liked the set up because it was set it and forget it (beside switching the drive one a week). I would continue this back up over the network but I can't get the SmartWare to work with a map drive or network share. It ran in the background with low system impact. The files were password protected but still cross platform. I could connect the drive to any computer and enter a password and access my files. Right now I can set up a back up task on the NAS but I can't figure out how to protect the files in case the drive is stolen and if the NAS is stolen or dies I want to be able to recover my files to a different device. I'm having trouble getting back to the "set it and forget it", cross-platfrom, secure back up. Any ideas or suggests for software to help get my backups running?

Is crashplan  available on the DS415+? I'm pretty sure it encrypts backed up files before uploading to your backup location. I've used it on PCs and once the setup is done it's pretty much set + forget.

EDIT:

It seems that a docker container is better than running crashplan directly. Have a look at this for discussion of running Crashplan on Docker.
