G+_Volkan Paksoy
Hi everyone, I'm planning to segment my network. I've been watching KH Three Dumb Routers and Routers Explained episodes. I have a bunch of old routers at home but I'm planning to go with Synology RT2600AC. Has anyone been using this on their own network? If so what are your opinions about it mostly from a security perspective? Does it allow VLANs and is there a limit on the number of them? Also are there any other models you can recommend with better security features? Thank you.
G+_Eric K
The RT2600 currently only supports VLAN tagging on the WAN port. So if you want to use them to segment your internal traffic you'll want to look elsewhere. Maybe an edge router x by ubiquiti.
G+_Volkan Paksoy
Eric K Thanks for the recommendation. I've looked into EdgeRouterX and looks like a nice device and quite affordable. I think they are not mutually exclusive though. So I can connect EdgeRouter to Modem and RT2600 to EdgeRouter as 1 LAN. I can make it my trusted network and then connect my old routers to other ports and create untrusted/guest networks completely isolated from each other. Please correct me if I'm getting it wrong. Thanks again.
G+_Rud Dog
Volkan Paksoy Just did a search on all the posting with the search criteria of Synology router -nas and your questions came up. Was wondering if you got this setup? If you did would you be so kind as to post some sort of drawing and setup information? I am getting ready to replace my RT-AC87u and would like to place it on a separate leg for my IOT devices. Looks like this might be something you have tried and would lie to follow your lead. G+_Volkan Paksoy
Rud Dog Yeah, it took a few tries but eventually I got it running. Quite busy these days but over the weekend I'll try to summarise what I did and what equipment I used. Also I could use some help from the community as well as I'm trying to add a switch between the modem and the core router to be able to inspect all traffic but wasn't able to succeed so far. I'll provide all the details I can this weekend.
