G+_Steve C
In Know How 63 at 0:25:00 where Fr. Robert is trying to show how to share wi-fi, that didn't work for me in Win7 SP1. Did anyone else get it to work? There must be some steps missing. I typed in the whole Netsh command and I got the same results he did but that didn't make a new virtual wifi hotspot for me, I still have the same 2 adapters that I started with. I even tried each Netsh option one at a time and they each seemed to work but when I put it all together and tried it nothing happened. I wanted to see how that works using the command line but it's a lot easier to just check the Network Sharing box and that does work.
G+_Bradley Bishop
I saw this and I wondered something else: Weren't you able to share your internet connection in WinXP? I as pretty sure it was standard and you could do it from, I think, the control panel. I swear I had done it at one time and I don't ever remember it being a complicated process. G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
It does NOT work in Windows 7.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
steve c You've posted that in several places. So please, if you really think you can make a hotspot in Win7 (not an ad-hoc bridge) simply by turning on ICS, please post a video and I'll put it on KH. G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Sigh -- Steve C ... read what you just wrote... and tell me how that turned your LAPTOP into a hotspot.
G+_Bradley Bishop
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ This did use to be there in XP, though, right? Or am I remembering it wrong. Also, I like your more advanced subjects and I like that you're on Know How. I had just learned about VLANs about a year before and thought they were pretty cool. G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Bradley Bishop Absolutely. In XP you could turn on ICS and create a hotspot with no further commands. That was left out in all Windows OS versions including and after Vista.
G+_Bradley Bishop
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ It just seems strikingly dumb that they did that. I've since moved onto Macs where it's just a checkbox. I don't use it much, but it's nice that it's there. Something I like a bit more is the Airport Expresses. You can configure them to be a bridge or a router or a WAP to extend your network or whatever you like. Quite handy for these situations when traveling. Also (well, the last generation - about $60 refurb off Apple) they're pretty travel friendly in that they're just squarish and plug right into the wall. There are far cheaper routers that do the same thing. I think Netgear has a travel router for about $20 on Amazon that just requires you have a USB charger to power it. G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Bradley Bishop I agree. Supposedly they're putting the button back into Win 8.1, but I'll believe it when I see it.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Steve... that isn't a hotspot. That is an ad hoc connection with ethernet bridging.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
You know what... if THIS is how you get it to work on your laptop. More power to you. Enjoy.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
I'm not sure why I would feel bad because you couldn't get something to work. Am I missing something here?
