Who else has had that one who says to you "my PC seems to be running slow and it keeps shutting down" when you open the case the problem hits you in the face and when you ask the person, have they ever cleaned or had the inside of the PC cleaned and they just look at you and say " why do you need to clean it"

I'm a computer tech for a school department, and we still have some old Cisco switches in use... one went down, so we had a spare that I was going to pull a power supply from... when I opened up the one that went down... OH MAN!!! You SERIOUSLY couldn't see ANY components on the board or in the switch, there must have been about 10 years of dust in it... guess THAT'S why it went down!! lol..

Ah, you can monitor that, I used to do warranty service calls for Cisco, the Catalyst series can monitor fan RPM on even older units. Not sure if it monitors temp but if the fans are running fast then it's hot.

I've ran many a 2 AM service call in a bank branch because one of the fans burnt out, all you had to do is listen for what switch in the rack was running faster then the rest and that would be the one that had a fan out.

Indeed. I did a contract for a client refresh a year or two ago. Most of the PCs were Dell 520s and Gateways with similar conditions. What took the cake was the bacon sandwich remains inside the case of one. I don't even want to know what led to that. And the users were actively hindering us because they didn't want Windows 7.
