G+_Jason Perry
It's me again with another question from this past Thursdays show. The show talked about port forwarding as a way to connect multiple devices to the outside world. I am using IPFire as my firewall (which is a forlk of IPCop) on an old machine I have, and have some NICs installed in the extra slots. My plan was to section off some ports on my 16 port switch and run the DMZ to that; then, use the DNS server in IPFire to direct traffic to the correct host. I all ready have a domain and I have IPFire set up with DynDNS. Is this a viable solution or should I just stick to port forwarding? I enjoy tinkering So I am not scared of completely messing up and having to start again as long as it is worth the pain. Here is a link to some more info on IPFire for anyone who is interested. http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=ipfire
G+_Jason Perry
Just an update for anyone who may stumble upon this post. I am not the type of person to post and run if nothing comes from it. After some research the idea behind my above thought I found out the idea behind my above thought won't work. I am now looking at POUND as a possible solution, it is a reverse proxy and load balancer. This should let me forward incoming requests on port 80 to multiple servers (eg my webserver, file server, or login page to my IP camera). If anyone has any experience or warnings I would love to hear from you. I realize port forwarding will work but it is easier for people to remember file.domain.tld than domain.tld:xxxxx If this catches your interest here is the link to more info in IPFire's wiki http://wiki.ipfire.org/en/addons/pound/start
