Hello,

I am currently using IPFire as my firewall and would like some feedback on how the different open source solutions stack up. I am quite happy with IPFire over my short time with it; but, I am a big believer that you don't know what you don't know. In saying that I am not interested in what people think is a good firewall I am interested in why they think it is good. You will also be able to tell by my explination below that I am not an advanced user. I do use a good portion of IPFire's features and have installed a number of additional plugins but I am not about to tell you how to bypass firewalls and run exploits on the computers on the network.

I am a fin of IPFire because:

They continue to clean up their UI. Their latest version is very straight forward. there is nothing hiding off the top menu bar.

The zones keep it simple there is red (outside the firewall), orange (DMZ), Green (inside the network seperate from the DMZ), and blue (wireless connections. This has kept me from over complicating things. Yes I would love to create all kinds of zones, or at least a few more, but this has served me well so far.

It is increadibly easy to install plugins and there are lots of them. Personally too many. I want to use IPFire as my firewall not my file storage, media server, mail server, voip, p2p client, but everyone is different.

And not that it matters to me but it is supported in seven different languages, which is nice to know it is that diverse. Everyone thinks in different ways.

Thanks for your time and sorry about the long post?
