G+_Jason Perry
Fun question What kind of data can you (legally) receive from space I will open by getting the obvious ones out of the way GPS ISS slow scan TV NOAA weather data
G+_Benjamin Breüner Frost
hmm... depends on if it have to come directly from satellites or not.
G+_Benjamin Breüner Frost
i can't really find anything directly from satellites but there are databases with data from deferent things like gravity maps
G+_Jason Perry
Benjamin Frost, doesn't have to come from a satellite. I just couldn't think of another source off the top of my head that is worth spending the energy to receive a signal from. I figure there are all kinds of satellites and all kinds of people into amateur radio there has to be more than my 3 examples.
G+_Eddie Foy
I'd imagine any of the college sats should be fair game to receive. (they tend to be used for a year or 3 then the project has been completed. That's how the amateur radio sats get there, they start up when the college project is over)
G+_Eddie Foy
Come to think of it, anything that is not encrypted should be legal to RX. Breaking encryption is usually a no-no.
G+_Michael Heinz
In the US the principle used to be that the airwaves were public property and that if you could receive a signal you could do whatever you wanted with it. Sadly, that way of thinking began to fade when the government let over-the-air TV stations demand payment from cable companies, but I'm pretty sure you're allowed to try and decrypt any signals you happen to overhear. G+_Eddie Foy
I think Dish and DirectTV would disagree. As would the military and LEO's using encrypting coms. Decryption {that you don't rightfully own the keys to} is typically illegal in the US. The DMCA, CFAA, and NDAA pretty much cover that.
G+_Jason Perry
Eddie Foy, Thats what I thought now I am on the hunt for unencrypted satellites that may be sending something interesting my way.
G+_Jason Perry
I am pretty sure I have thousands of points to look at. Are UAV video downlinks still unencrypted? :)
G+_Michael Heinz
UAV video is plain old analog television, but it's very low power so the range is limited.
G+_Eddie Foy
Jason Perry what are you using for the scanning? RTL-sdr? HackRF? Scanner?
G+_Jason Perry
Eddie Foy, at this point I am not using anything. I am doing a little bit of research on what I want to receive and what aoftware I want to use before I buy; but, I am cheap so I will more than likely just be getting an rtl-sdr dongle to start. G+_Jason Perry
Michael Heinz that was more my attempt at a horrible joke given the USAF had people sitting outside their base in Afghanistan receiving the feed.
