G+_Jason Perry
I am looking for options for a project I am working on. I need someone with basic computer skills to be able to control 6 or more computers. I would like it to be cross platform to conserve Windows licences and it needs to be done on the cheap. Microsoft's mouse with out borders only does 4 screens So far my best bet looks like Multiplicity by EdgeRunner but I was wondering if anyone here had any other options I could look at. G+_610GARAGE
I use Synergy to go from my main desktop to my video editor. Works pretty well and is cross platform. It basically turns your other computer into an extended desktop. I do get some weirdness with copy and paste (like it only works in one direction or not at all). G+_Jason Perry
Thanks 610bob, I just found Synergy. There website doesn't seem to have a lot of information. I am not too worried about copy and paste functionality I would just be using it to start a program on a number of PC's. The one nice to have that I am trying to see if Synergy has is wake on LAN. I am currently searching through the FAQ and User Guide any input?
G+_610GARAGE
Unfortunately I don't know, but I kinda doubt it. I don't remember anything like that. I would look in the program but it wants to update and I just found out that it is now paid. WHAT???? It's still open source but I guess they're charging for the compiled version now. Well I'm now switching to mouse without borders. Could you just create a bat file to start the computers?
G+_Bill H. Sr. McMullen
Not certain I am clearly understanding your needs; but have you considered a KVM switch? I have independent monitors attached to each of four separate computers, while using a common keyboard and mouse. The independent monitors keep me constantly appraised of what is happening on each computer.
G+_Jason Perry
610bob, from what I have read you are right. You pay a one time fee of $10 for lifetime access to the compiled version. I am just searching for the source now, git hub only seems to be a user manual. I am also looking at input director and sharemouse. As for the WoL it is only a nice to have and didn't even think of it till I was looking over multiplicitys features. I will probably combine WoL when I look at automating the startup process. G+_Jason Perry
Bill H. Sr. McMullen, I have a KVM switch and I am still considering it. I am looking for a solution that someones great grandma that lives up in the bush and has never seen a computer could use. As sad as it sounds using a KVM to switch between computers just adds one more thing for people to get lost in. Plus my current KVM is PS2 and the computers I am using are usb. G+_Bill H. Sr. McMullen
Many of us have faced the family elders challenge in computer support. (Even though I am a family elder). Would not Grandma be best served by using only one computer? I still feel as though I am missing some element of your needs. Also, please be certain that Grandma is comfortable in changing scree resolution, as well as use of any display magnification software. Dependent upon the expense of electricity, for security''s sake please set up Grandma's computer to auto-update in the wee hours; and advise her that the most stress which can be applied to electronics is the process of turning it On. Show her how she may , if necessary, turn off and on the display screen independently of shutting down the computer. Spinning HDD's eventually wear out. Grandma may be best served if you build her computer using SSD;s . At a minimum, set up the OS on an SSD, AND move her Docs, Pictures, etc folders onto a physically separate drive. I too in the past have utilized PS2 KVM switches as was appropriate for the hardware at that moment in time. I upgraded the KVM switch to type USB as the change in hardware and cables required; just as we upgrade any pieces of our equipment over time ("To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,..."). Updating your KVM switch should not be a big impediment for you.
G+_Jason Perry
Bill H. Sr. McMullen, Sorry, grandma was just an example for how straight forward and simple the process needs to be. the end goal is push one button and everything starts starts with a UI that you don't realize how many computers you are actually using. Funny enough the rest of your points are what make me think i am going to need to do some youtube videos so I dont get daily 'how does this thing work' calls. This is the project I am looking for the solution for. https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/116541246478511491240
