I actually have one of these cards and was planing to use it when I went to see my god kid's later this year. Simply because I could use it at gas stations that might have a skimmer attached to them. If someone got my card information they would not be able to pull out cash from my bank account or rack up charges.

Add this to the pile of Google Abandonware that I found essential. Reminds me a bit of when they killed Reader. And my fear is that Google Voice is next.

 

The reason I liked is card is that it gave me a bit more certainty when I had to swipe the card in strange places. I'd load up the card with only the amount I needed just before I use it, get the confirmation notification, and go about my day not worried about any kind of scams.

 

I've read somewhere else that PayPal has a debit MasterCard that works similarly, I'll have to look into it.

Nick Gailfus yeah unfortunately the Amex one costs $5 / month - I didn't bother to look up the Simple card because it seems it requires a regular direct deposit. Even Paypal's Prepaid MasterCard charges $5 / month. It seems they try to offer you cash back rewards in return for the $5.
