G+_Jason Perry
Before anyone comments. The only game being played is solitare, their current laptop has office, google earth, and a web browser, thats about it.
G+_Keith Mallett
Try the Dell XPS series. Leo approved... Not sure what the US web page is but here is the Canadian. I think with the exchange rate you can cut the price in half. http://www.dell.com/ca/p/xps-13-9350-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC
G+_Jason Perry
Wayne Hobbins, I am still working on explaining the difference between a web browser and the internet. I dont think I am brave enough to introduce a new OS. My current thought is something like this http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_577_369&item_id=34716Z The price is higher because it is in CAD
G+_Keith Mallett
No No No No.... I shake my head No... You will regret the HP. If you don't want Dell go with Lenovo but stay away from the HP. Ever list to Leo's Tech Guy podcast?
G+_Rob Yesta
I have been looking at laptops and I do like some of the Lenovos. Lower end example http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?sdtid=8452441&SID=bc79590cc07b11e5b7c3da716ee9e25f0000&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na&itemnumber=N82E16834321235 Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ seems to talk about Acers, maybe he has recommendation. I am getting a Razor :)
G+_Black Merc
I have the same requirements(mom and dad to techie son). K.i.s.s... basic hardware(refurbished or new), basic O.S. secure and functional(that leaves out windows). Once you explain how to do what the user wants to do on the system(don't go into os details, it will confuse them) they will have no problems. Do a monthly checkup on the system for updates... no problems, my experience.
G+_610GARAGE
I havn't looked into getting a laptop for a while, but I have had great success with Asus. I've bought 3 laptops made by them in the past and all of my motherboards ar from them. My laptop is about 4 years old and still works great (though it could use an ssd). G+_Jason Perry
Keith Mallett, I have no brand loyalty. The dell you linked to is the one I want. Unfortunately it is out of my parents price range. Their point is is $1000CAD which is about $750USD
G+_Ben Reese
My mom likes her Chromebook and it's not expensive for one with touchscreen. They still have a Windows desktop for stuff that needs Windows. I bought my wife an Acer E11 about 8 months ago with a 250GB HDD. The laptop was ~$200 (USD) and I upgraded it to an SSD (250GB Samsung 850 EVO) which boosted the performance tremendously. If they need Windows but not much power, something like the Acer E11 or HP Stream are decent buys. You might also be able to find something decent on Craigslist (is there Craigslist in Canada?) or eBay, but it would need more work initially (maybe new battery, replace spinning HD with SSD, clean install of Windows...). G+_Jason Perry
Ben Reese I think kijiji.com redirects to ebay. You have to go to the .ca
G+_Jason Perry
So I am convinced whatever I get I am going to have to upgrade to get what I want. I was just looking at the Lenovo ThinkPad E560 20EV and upgrading to at least 8GB of RAM and a 120GB SSD. http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9953519&CatId=4935

G+_Jason Perry
Unless I am missing something I think the Asus is the better deal The only down side is the battery which really urks me Here is the comparison There are other things I was looking at but omitted because they are the same in both. Lenovo Cost $950 Processor Core i5 2.3GHz Memory 4GB DDR3L Hard Drive 50GB HDD Display 15.6" 1366x768 Battery 6 cell Li-ion 48Wh capacity Asus Cost $1099 Processor Core i7 2.5GHz Memory 8GB DDR3L Hard Drive 128GB SSD & 1TB HDD Display 15.6" 1920 x 1080 Battery 3 cell Li-ion 48Wh capacity That being said, the Asus is probably more than I was looking for; but, to upgrade the memory and hard drive on the Lenovo would put me at the same cost. G+_Keith Mallett
Yes that was going to be my suggestion, the battery life is less but they use better batteries than Dell is using so I have seen less batteries need replacing in the first year. G+_Keith Mallett
Jason Perry Look at these and see if they will fit your requirements. http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-15-7558-laptop/pd?ref=PD_Family
G+_Ben Reese
I'd probably hold off on the RAM if you upgrade to an SSD. From 4GB to 8GB you might gain a little, but from HDD to SSD you'll gain a lot! For perspective, my work laptop has an i5, SSD, and 4 GB RAM. The system is very responsive even with 3 instances of SQL Server running and 40 other windows open. If they're not doing anything big like video editing, I doubt they'd need more than 4 GB. Unless they're going to have 200 Facebook tabs open in Chrome.... Then they'll need more RAM.
G+_Keith Mallett
Jason Perry This Dell system went on sale today ($626 off the $1605 price tag), it is just outside of your price range but probably the best buy at $979 http://www.dell.com/ca/business/p/latitude-3550-laptop/pd?oc=cal153w7pf5ca&model_id=latitude-3550-laptop

G+_Ben Reese
Should last them a long long time through many batteries.
G+_Keith Mallett
Very nice! Jason Perry Make sure they get an AC wifi router or AP. I just set up the D-Link 850L on the weekend and I was getting 433Mbps so I was able to use most of my 30Mbps Teksavvy service. http://ca.dlink.com/products/connect/wireless-ac1200-dual-band-gigabit-cloud-router-dir-850l/
G+_Jason Perry
Ben Reese, that has been my goal every time I get them a new one. The shortest run I have had is 5 years. The one prior to that was at least 7.
