G+_James Nennemann
Anyone know of a Type 1 hypervisor for workstations? I'm thinking of something that would appear nearly like a bios screen that would handle one or more guest VMs. For my purpose, I would only need one guest VM, but the ability to do background snapshots for that VM. My thought is that all these moms and grandmothers, sisters, uncles etc. who really hose up Windows could simply have their mistakes 'undone' and revert back to their functional state. Now on top of that, if the Hypervisor was cloud-aware, so that each of these remote machines could relay basic state info (hard drive use, memory, processing, etc) back to my office, that would be incredible. Add the ability to remote manage and I think I could give up beer (... for a week, maybe). Here is the scenario... Mom brings in her crappy WinXP/Vista/Win7 box and says... this isn't working for me. I then boot up Linux on the machine, collect her personals off of it, then wipe the machine and install this mystery HV. As it boots for the first time, I hold down a modifier key, enter a password and go into a barebones management console that lets me load the VM and enter in some cloud relay service that keeps me connected to it. I also establish a schedule for snapshots. Then I reboot, and let it bypass the management access screen. Windows (or whatever) proceeds to boot, and I set up the machine with the personal files and tweak it for Mom. Three weeks later, Mom calls, says, "I downloaded this coupin clipper, and now I have boobie toolbars on my web browser". I log into my remote HV admin console, select a good snapshot, and boom, there goes the dynamite; her machine is fully restored in minutes. Everyone goes to bed happy. btw... My Mom actually has a Mac... XD

G+_James Nennemann
Wish it was OSS. Yes, it is Xen based, but wrapped up in much proprietary stuff too.
