G+_Mark Swaim
I read this article. My initial reaction,Not going to happen. Anyone really think Achmed deserves 15 million? Want yes, deserve I say no. http://m.nydailynews.com/news/national/texas-teen-arrested-homemade-clock-demands-15-million-article-1.2444435 http://m.nydailynews.com/news/national/texas-teen-arrested-homemade-clock-demands-15-million-article-1.2444435
G+_Randy Hudson
One can demand anything.
G+_Kyle Turpin
You don't aim low in a case like this, especially when his lifelong reputation and earnings might be affected.
G+_David Pick
Kyle Turpin I figured there is a legal reason to demand that amount. I would only caution Achmed to have lowered expectations. But so far he hasn't exhibited any signs of doing so through out his entire ordeal. Probably showing good signs he can be an engineer. There is a certain argoance I've witnessed with some. G+_Paul Comeau
wow nice clickbait headline.. some how i doubt the "teen" has demanded anything. As the article makes clear it's the lawyers shooting for this sum (wonder what their cut is.) And again it'll help gloss over that the situation was mishandled by the school in many ways. G+_David Pick
Paul Comeau? Absolutely. I was surprised myself how heavily click bait this article is. But despite it being click bait.Just trying to understand where this dollar amount is coming from??
G+_Doug McCollough
As has been said, punitive damages are not based on what anyone deserves but are designed to be painful to the payer. "Punishment". Why doesn't everybody know this?
G+_David Pick
Doug McCollough We're not all lawyers or familiar outside the scope of small claims court. Obviously, this is not a small claims case. This is a jury trial if held in court. Unknown if both sides can agree on an settlement before it comes to that. G+_Doug McCollough
Maybe we all should learn the basics of the American legal system. Doesn't take a law degree to know how punitive damages works. Otherwise we would all walk around astonished at the awards courts deliver and demonizing lawyers, and that wouldn't be a very good way to live. G+_Paul Comeau
just adding to punitive damages comments... also remember this is a civil case. In U.S. law those are quite different then a criminal case. So damages can be what ever the lawyers think is appropriate and/or get away with depending on their ethics. Also in cases like this the lawyers generally negotiate a cut of the settlement (no clue what %) so they are incentivized to go for a high amount. Again this will sadly take the focus away from the practices of both the school and city, which have been rather racist over the years.
G+_Doug McCollough
True Paul. This may take the public focus off. But keep in mind that win or lose, many school districts and cities will take a look at themselves and make changes to their policies and practices. Not out of doing the right thing, but out of fear of that number. In this way, punitive damages can serve an important and valuable social function. Often people's hearts will not change, but their behavior might. And that's a good step.
G+_Randy Hudson
I do walk around astonished at the judgements courts lay down, and lawyers are demons Doug.
G+_David Pick
Doug McCollough It depends on one's viewpoint if this punitive damages case will ultimately bring positive change. I just see more bad then good for everybody involved.
G+_Doug McCollough
Not everyone believes in the value of the American legal system. That's fine. I happen to appreciate it. But I'll ask. If punitive damages are more bad then good then what checks are in place to prevent the rich and powerful from abusing the weak and disadvantaged? It's not a perfect method, but if it wasn't there I don't believe we (the public, not the individual ) would gain any consequences for the actions of this powerful institution and others like it. That's why I support it. But I understand why some dont.
G+_Guy Massie
Punitive? To benefit all they must require that the inept teacher pass some semblance of an engineering test to continue educating. If the kid was indignant, I don't blame him. It seems the adults around him need lessons in human behavior and, certainly, common sense. 15 mil solves nothing. His clock didn't appear to be some Radio Shack kit. He has some tech moxy. He'll be alright. All this over a LED, PCB and .... oh dear .... wires.?

G+_Mez Pahlan
To be fair I noticed Leo pronounce his name like this with an emphasis on the guttural sounding misspelling. I've always heard it pronounced with a soft AH rather than ACK. But maybe that's just here in the UK? ?
