G+_Ben Reese
I'm interested! Not sure what this really means, but it sounds interesting none the less. The SQL Server on Linux sounds more interesting to me though.
G+_Keith Mallett
Jason Perry Very profound! Don't worry - its just a ploy to make Apple jealous!
G+_Stewart Leathwood
I would think you would want to do that the other way around. That's what I do now.
G+_Keith Mallett
Stewart Leathwood exactly what do you do the "other way around"????
G+_Stewart Leathwood
+ Keith Mallett run Windows Virtual Machines on Ubuntu.
G+_Keith Mallett
Ah! the real way to run MS servers... On the back of a free OS. Just fabulous!
G+_Travis Hershberger
Ah, you had to read to near the end of the article in order to figure out what's actually going on. Microsoft is getting the tools ready to run containers.
G+_Keith Mallett
"Getting Ready" is the default condition for MS....
G+_Ben Reese
They also specifically say this isn't running Ubuntu in a VM. Windows/Canonical are building the libraries to run Ubuntu in Windows. Again, not real sure how that looks or works, but they make sure to point out it's not virtualization.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Ben Reese Sounds more like Docker than true virtualization.
G+_Ben Reese
Yeah, it does. I'm sure the two initiatives are related.
G+_Jason Perry
What does this mean for power shell?
G+_Keith Mallett
Nothing! Power Shell will run on a Core install. It would be foolish for MS to let that suffer.
G+_Rud Dog
Having ubuntu on my Windows machine might sway my decision to upgrade to W10. Not sure from what I read if/when this will happen.
G+_Steve Martin
The way this works is they created a driver on Windows that takes system calls for Linux and translates them to the NT kernel. So pretty much everything you can run under Ubuntu will run here. They are real 64-bit ELF binaries. You can even use apt to install software. No GUI though, so no X or other GUI based Linux apps. Its sort of between full VM and Win32 compiled utilities like Cygwin. So you get bare metal kinds of performance. The Windows file system is mounted under /mnt so /mnt/c for instance. G+_Steve Martin
Rud Dog they said it will be available to fast ring users who take developer releases in the next couple of weeks. It should be available to anyone with the Summer Update in July.
