Few quick questions

I believe that was Comcast that they said is experimenting with Gigabit over their current network.

 

According to the docsis wiki, 24 channels down and 8 up will give you about 1030×250Mbps (down×up). A quick search took me to the Arris SB6190 on Best Buy which said it will do 32×8.

So, yes. I believe Gigabit cable modems are available - though not symmetric Gigabit like fiber can offer.

According to some random person at dslreports Google Fiber is using GPON (shared ports) in most areas.  Even if they are using GPON tho, 10GB and 40GB fiber ports should be able to keep everyone on the connection at gigabit speeds.  So yes, it is really fiber to the home, but some people whine and complain about them using shared ports.  http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Google-Fiber-to-Launch-in-Salt-Lake-City-by-Years-End-136577
