G+_Jason Perry
Next question. I am looking for antivirus recommendations. Here are my criteria, Needs to be well rated year after year, Doesn't need to have the top score I don't want it to announce its presence to me Don't want to notice it bogging my system down I don't want bells and whistles, kinda goes with previous point. Free I have used AVG and avast in the past. Currently looking at BitDefender and Avira as my next AV program. Since we are talking AV any recommendations for a program for a pfsense box. I am pretty sure clamwin makes one. How well do these programs work?
G+_610GARAGE
I find windows defender (or whatever they're calling it now) works pretty well as a basic AV.
G+_610GARAGE
Wayne Hobbins Microsoft Security Essentials (aka windows defender) will delete a downloaded file if it knows that it is a virus. I had it happen. Accidentally clicked something and a download started. Then MSE popped up and said that it was deleting it. But yea, no antivirus fixes stupidity. This is why I force my parents to use linux. No matter how much they complain. :)
G+_Keith Mallett
That's easy Jason Perry Sophos. My company became a partner in order to sell it we were so impressed with it. They release a free home PC version at Christmas (Mac has always been free) that allows users to have up to 10 computers for non-commercial use per email address. It's been rated year after year by Gartner in the top five vendors. You need to register by creating an account but there is no costs. https://home.sophos.com/reg
G+_Keith Mallett
On top of that, use MalwareBytes and SpyBot free version but they are not persistent. Run them a couple of times each month or when you suspect something is wrong.
G+_Brian Runyon
I have used Avast for years and really like, never had issues with it.
G+_Eddie Foy
Never mentioned OS, but assume Win (since Linux and Mac OSX never get malware ) Are there any 'virri' anymore? Its all moved to maleware/spyware. Long gone are the self replicating/morphing 2k file injecting virus that would overclock a GPU and fry the monitor. Everything I've made with msfpayload/msfvennom has been caught with MS Sec Essentials or default MS EMET. install. Biggest protection you can have is not run with admin/root rights/priv. G+_Larry Havenstein
Wayne Hobbins Thats not true on Window 8, 8.1 or 10 as Defender on those versions of windows is the same as Security Essentials. It even acts the same. On Windows 7 they were seperate packages. Defender as an AV is built in and included with 8, 8.1 and 10.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Well, even the best rated ones miss a LOT of things today. Just stick with Defender if you're running Windows 8, 8.1, or 10. If you're on Linux, get change monitoring software (chkrootkit). Security today is more about not clicking the bad thing than active protection on a local system. G+_Ben Reese
Not to sound like a broken record, but I recommend no 3rd party AV. If you download something suspicious that you want to keep, upload it to virustotal.com and let them all scan it.
G+_Larry Havenstein
What will do as much as the AV product is using some plugins on your browser. Number 1 should be Web of Trust, Don't go to a link unless Web of Trust shows green and you will do a lot to save your bacon. Next if you can live with the hassle a flash blocker or just have one browser installed with no flash installed as your default surfing browser. Third thing that can make a difference is use some kind of non tracking plugin. I know that is controversial but on by default browsing its a safe way to go. If you like the site (would like them to get money) and trust them you can turn the ad blocker/tracking blocker off for a site. Web of trust has saved my bacon many times and its painless. G+_610GARAGE
Wayne Hobbins Yea, I think Microsoft discovered that windows defender name is too simple and direct. They have to make it sound boring and confusing. :)
G+_John Phillips
I don't recommend Avira as it spy's on everything you do, I do recommend defender as a cheap but really quite good option, no one knows Windows better than MS does
