Practical Reverse Engineering: Hunting for Debug Ports

One item I didn't see while skimming it is verifying the voltage o the uart rx/tx lines. (did see about not connecting to the Vcc)  Using a multimeter is not the way to go.  With it modulating so fast, the meter will read a lower voltage.  This is where a o'scope becomes indispensable.  I, personally, wouldn't trust just reading the Vcc pin for the rx/tx voltage)

PC based are junk.  They will use up all the USB bandwith and more.  Not too many USB 3.0 versions.

Bite the bullet and get a standalone 'Scope.

The Rigols are about the best bang for the buck you can get.  A nice used HP, Tektronics, or Agilent off ebay is an option too.

Now a PC based function generator would be fine.  Could probably even use the soundcard, but would be I think, 1v p-p.  Would need an external follower to boost voltage.

Eddie Foy it is always a joy to read your response to my questions and the monetary aspect of the questions leaves the conversation as the first fatality of the discussion. But I still follow up on your suggestions and like the fact knowledge falls in my lap when I do. Thank you.
