G+_Jason Perry
What maker tools do you have on your computer? I think it is safe to say there is an obvious need for some sort of CAD software. I can't see a maker having a computer without having the Arduino IDE on it. Then there is the need for their favorite programming environment for their languages of choice. What do you have on your computer? I feel like I am overlooking a section of makerism.
G+_610GARAGE
Notepad++ and putty are a must for me. win32diskimager and infrarecorder are nice to have and I usually have them installed. Cad software, I use LibreCAD. It's fairly nice 2d cad. But it will give me problems, so I will also use cadstd. Programing environment. I use Netbeans, but I hate it. I just hate it less than eclipse. :)

G+_Jason Perry
610bob, I cant believe I forgot about putty, putty is a must. I should mention Rufus for anyone looking to make a bootable USB, I love that program. Can I ask what you have against eclipse, not that I am defending it. I want to start playing with an MQTT broker and I think I am going to be forced to use it.
G+_610GARAGE
Jason Perry I should preface this by saying that it has been a while since I have used eclipse. They may have improved. But my problem is that it is really bloated, sluggish and unstable. I remember using it and not sure if the errors were in my code, or the ide. When it's having a good day, it's not bad, but it's those bad days that really irritated me. Netbeans has similar problems. Like I have to use an older version for remote debugging to work (that only took me a month to figure out). But when you get it working, I find it more stable then eclipes. I think both IDEs are built on java, which I think is there downfall.
G+_Ben Reese
My desktop is pretty slim right now, so I'll give a mix of what I use on my desktop and work laptop (in no particular order). Notepad++ 7-Zip Visual Studio Eclipse Putty SQL Server Management Studio Win SQL Win 32 Disk Imager Sardu (similar to RUFUS, I think, and let's you create a multi-boot USB... Need to check Rufus out) Libre Office Cute PDF WinDirStat Ultra VNC Win SCP Audacity VLC Gimp Paint.net I'm sure there are others I missed. I typically start a PC setup by visiting Ninite.com and checking all the programs I like. That gives one installer and they promise to always give the latest version without any normally bundled add-ons (Ask Toolbar, McAfee, etc). If the program is already installed, Ninite will try updating it.

G+_Jason Perry
Ryan Standeven, Fritzing looks interesting, what are the limitations, and how stable is it? I know Eagle CAD has a board size limitation for the free edition.

G+_Jason Perry
Ben Reese, a solid list of tools. Sardu looks more robust. Rufus is lightweight and fast. I am going to have to try Sardu out so I can compare.
G+_Jason Perry
Eddie Foy, Xojo looks real put together. There doesn't seem to be an explanation about what the difference between the paid version and free version is, any insight? how come I get the feeling if I ever need to know more about M2M I know who to ask :)
G+_Eddie Foy
Jason Perry Xojo, didn't know they had a free version. I'm quite a few versions behind, but I do like writing on the mac and cross compiling for Win and linux ( with just a few extra lines of code) without having to boot into them and compile. And the remote debugger is kinda cool too. install a stub and debug the target machine/os remotely.

G+_Ben Reese
Jason Perry? I didn't register. I considered buying the upgrade so I can have multiple Win7-10 installers on one drive, but haven't yet.
